Hard to get worked up over such a small tax on people who can clearly afford it.

Pretty sure they will just move outside of the city limits and not pay it.

As much as I like the idea...lets be realistic...in the end of the day this will just affect the lower classes.

Higher prices...less hours and or pay...in the long run they will find someway to make the lower classes pay for their higher taxes.

    Or just flat out leave...

Well, with the new tax on diet drinks intended to "fight white privilege" and now a tax proposal meant to punish those mean old rich people, I wouldn't want to be a rich white man in Seattle.

Additionally, this tax increase seems to be a bad idea, given that the state has repeatedly shot down graduated income tax proposals.

the thing about this tax is there is a law that makes it so if one group is taxed everyone will get taxed. Meaning that if this passes they will be able to put up a income tax on everyone which would never pass but this might. The soda tax is fucking stupid and people will just leave the city for soda.

"The council proposal notes that the state has among the most regressive tax systems in the country."

"Supporters of the new tax say the city's explosive economic growth and prosperity has created significant wealth and opportunity, but it has also exacerbated the affordable housing crisis that has put a strain on those in lower income brackets."

Why wouldn't you want to fix that?

Also, the ones with low income are planned on paying less, and middle ones about the same.

You might also want stop worshiping the rich, when you are not one yourself. I just wonder how large the gap is supposed to be before people say regressive taxing might be a bad idea?

Simple solution, move out of the city, the burbs are probably nicer anyway. Tax avoided. When the cities tax revenue plummets as a result, theyll know who to blame.

This is definitely true in Seattle's case. The surrounding areas are generally much nicer.

So, What will you do when the people decide they dont want to be taxed any further and they move out of the area? then the city will have to lower the threshhold of who they consider 'wealthy' and they'll end up leaving... Eventually Seattle will look like Detroit.

you could make an Olympic ski jump out of the slippery slope argument you're making... Not everyone has a home that comes on wheels.. but most people, even wealthy ones can't "afford" or are willing (work, family, daycare, friends) to pack up and move on a whim just to spite a small tax increase.

It's amusing how you are so certain of that. If some people who work less (even less) than you start extorting your money at a gunpoint, would you take the chance to leave if you had it?

So allowing small children to watch baseball equals communism. Got it.

No, forcing others to do that for them is.

The rich vote themselves money all the time. Why can't poor people get in on the fun?

oh, now there are guns? Thanks for not being dramatic...

taxation is the cost of living in society.

Is this another one of those threads where people who will never reach the income bracket these tax increases are for cry about how everyone is going to leave the state, the economy will crash and burn, and the obligatory taxation is theft is spoken?

? Not sure what you're trying to say here. Yes, there are guns, because the state is the monopoly on aggression. If a person refuses to hand over his money, he gets threatened with aggression - and that IS 'at a gunpoint', because if that person (fairly) chooses to protect his private property, he gets treated in the most criminal way possible.

And spare me you 'cost of living in society'. The cost of living in society is working to get what you want. Expecting others to pay for your sweet 'life in the society' is what resulted in millions of deaths in the countries that took the whole socialism experiment too seriously.

Except that there is, unless something affects everyone or no one it isn't right.
