Blizzard Shut Down A Private Server In Record Time Today

So this guy, 'Gummy', had been developing the most perfectly scripted and blizzlike TBC server in the history of private servers. He spent 5 years of his time, developed his own emulation core, and swore to never take one cent of money for it. Nearly 40,000 accounts were created before it went live today (he had to shut down new account creation because of the flood of players). At one point, he put up a 2nd server to handle the overflow, which quickly hit cap and developed a queue of thousands; the first server hit queues within seconds, at one point it had a 5k queue each on both horde and alliance. Within 5 hours Blizzard hand delivered a cease and desist letter, to Gummy's residence (apparently they were just waiting for the much hyped and anticipated launch).

    40,000 accounts.

Blizzard is really missing out on a decent sum of cash by not hosting legacy servers. Hell, they could probably just rerelease the game, starting at the beginning, and would probably get a million new subs.

    Good riddance.

Spending years of one's life doesn't change the fact the assets he's using are not his to use.

Yes, the hordes of people flocking to free servers are clearly evidence of that. /s

Seems a shame TBC was my favorite time period of the game. I get that blizzard has to protect its ip but seems a shame to hear. Hopefully he releases the code and gets it some place blizz is gonna struggle to take it down.

most of the private servers out there have cash shops, they make an excellent living from their 'donations'. hell, there's one popular server, supposedly over 50k players, that fakes their population in order to get people to donate to skip the queues, even with the faked queue and population, there's still thousands of people on.

You mean people will play a game that took years to produce by a AAA game studio that had had further years of balancing by said studio if they can do it absolutely free of any charge?

Color me surprised... oh, wait, no. That's exactly to be expected. Of course people are going to pirate a game, especially one with years of added content like WoW, for free.

If this guy was so accomplished at coding and scripting and wished to work on WoW, he probably would have been better off applying for a job at blizzard, rather than trying to steal their IP.

There are people out there who want to play, but please don't act like its such a large number that it would matter to Blizzard.
They SHOULD make a legacy project, but its not because the game was better or there would be millions of people.
300k people signed a petition when Nostalrius got shut down. For free.
More than 300k people return with each expansion.

There is no reason for them to do it that is money related, but I hope they will because it is the right thing to do and there are thousands out there who would play.

So what? There's still no evidence that a significant number of players would pay a subscription for legacy servers. Even if there was a significant number, it's NEVER. GOING. TO. HAPPEN. If there was a shot it was when the whole Nostalrius thing happened and instead Blizz paid the legacy fanbois some lipservice and then let the whole idea die.

We don't allow discussion of private servers here.

    Closing.
