thank you. I was tired last night, so my answer was actually kinda brief.
Here's 3 reasons for why I feel like GoT is the best show I've seen in years.
1: as mentioned before, the story. You ask me to give you a summary of most TV shows, and it can be done. Breaking bad? A teacher with cancer begins developing and selling drugs and ends up going from a meek guy to Scarface over the years. Walking Dead? Random group of strangers kill each other amidst a zombie apocalypse. etc. Each of these shows have a character that is clearly the protagonist, the lead, the hero (or heroine) along with a supporting cast, and even if the rest of the characters start dropping like flies, these protagonists are untouchable. You see the story exclusively from their eyes, and their perspective. GoT however has a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE cast. This chart is only for the cast as it was during season 1 and it fails to include several other characters introduced in later seasons. And the story is narrated from the point of view of several people. There's several plotlines happening all at once, at different parts of the world, each of these interweaving and influencing one another in ways that are both unpredictable and unexpected.
From Arya's adventures across two continents, as she plots her revenge against those who killed her family, to Jon Snow's adventures in the north as he deals with his self-imposed exile and the threat of a monstrous enemy that will devour the world, to Daenerys' adventures on the other side of the world, as she goes from a meek and battered princess in exile, to the most powerful political force across two continents and builds herself up from nothing, to Sansa's neverending string of tragedies and abuses at the hands of people who treat her like property, to Robb's rebellion against the evil king that killed his father, to Tyrion's adventures as he uses his incomparable silver tongue to perform feats most would think impossible for a guy like him, to Sam's quest to prove his worth to a family that will never love him, to Jorah's quest to earn the love of a woman who will never love him back. And these are not even 25% of all the many many MANY plotlines that you follow in the show, each with their own protagonist, villain, and relevance to the overall overarching plot.
And, due to the unpredictable nature of the show, a lot of the plotlines you follow end up with their respective protagonist killed, or merging with other plots as the seasons advance. The story is just massive in scope, and very VERY well structured and put together.
2: The fight scenes. You wouldn't think a show set in medieval fantasy would be complete without their mandatory fight scenes. For the most part the fights are realistic (With the odd artistic license here and there) and very well choreographed. Its just a joy when a fight happens and you get to see the characters duke it out. Specially because there's pretty much no magic here, no wizards to break the balance of a battle. Along this point is the production values of the show. The first two seasons had an overall humble budget, which meant the fight scenes were few and far between and most of the "battles" in the war, took place offscreen, but as the show's popularity grew, so did its budget (Season 6 alone had a budget of 10 million dollars PER EPISODE) and it shows. There's movies out there with lesser effects than GoT. From the fantastic creatures like Direwolves, Dragons, Giants, Revenants and White Walkers, to things like Green Fire nuclear bomb equivalents, to massive epic scale sweeping battlefield sequences that don't shy away from the horrors of what medieval war feels like.
Make no mistake about it, GoT's battles are more or less the medieval version of Saving Private Ryan.
3: The characters. Its not often that I find a show where I like everyone. Even the people I hate, I also love to hate them. The villains are amazing, the heroes are amazing, the bystanders are amazing. They're all multi-layered three-dimentional characters with deep personalities and motivations. The clished caricaturesque bad guys are very few. Most of them are very complex personalities, with more to them than what meets the eye. Just when you think you've gotten the measure of them as people, they go ahead and do something that goes against your expectations of them. Which helps with the unpredictability of the show. I'm not joking when I say you'll grow to enjoy watching these people interact with each other, be them fighting, arguing, fucking, or just traveling together. As far as child actors go, they did an outstanding job picking up the children that worked on this show. Which again, its VERY rare in television.
These are in more detail, the top 3 reasons why you should give GoT a chance. I can almost guarantee you'll not regret it. And as I said before, I actually consider the sex scenes and the nudity the weakest part of the show. Not sexy enough. There's actual porn out there with better and more arousing sex scenes. These hardly even qualify as a warmer.
