OT: What is absolutely obvious is that terrorists are wising up extremely fast to counter-surveillance techniques, which is a VERY worrying trend. There isn't an awful lot that security forces can do to stop someone determined to carry out an attack if he's keeping to himself. Most of them get caught because they end up talking about it to someone else.

This isn't true. They aren't wising up. Four Lions is pretty much an accurate portrayal of UK militants. They are inept. Community policing cuts have massively damaged the polices ability to gather and filter intel. Tip offs and human intelligence are the most important methods in fighting domestic terrorism. You can handwave and dismiss it all you want, but police cuts mean that police can't handle terror threats without the army, it means intelligence dries up, and you are willfully ignoring warnings from the police federation, serving officers and commisioners.

But hey create you own narrative devoid of reality.

The kid was part of the Libyan exile community in Manchester, his father was part of Libyan Islamic Fighting Group. UK covert action in Libya in 2011 supported and armed jihadi groups such as LIFG, as a proxy force against Qadafi to promote its foreign policy objectives. He was allowed to go to Libya and Syria and return handwaved by MI6 through security in order to fight for LIFG. The government had an 'open door’ policy that allowed Libyan exiles and British-Libyan citizens to join the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Qadafi (which he did with his father, before going to Syria to fight with an AQ affiliate there or possibly IS according to french intelligence and his sisters testimony).

Its complex as british support for LIFG goes back to the 1990's : there was an operation to assassinate Qadafi using the LIFG 1996, that failed and let to Britian allowing members of LIFG to settle in the UK (manchester).
