The Caribbean island of Dominica has lost "all (that) money can buy" after being battered by Hurricane Maria's 160mph winds, the nation's prime minister has declared after his own dramatic rescue.
Roosevelt Skerrit was saved as the category five storm, which is set to hit British overseas territories still reeling from Irma, tore off the roof of his house as it flooded.
"Initial reports are of widespread devastation," he wrote in a Facebook post, adding that he feared news of "serious physical injury and possible deaths".
"So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace."
Mr Skerrit said the hurricane had "triggered an avalanche of torn away roofs in the city and the countryside".
