However this is mostly because of China. The movie was a huge success in China.
No it did not. First of all the marketing is never part of a movies "budget" and movies like this usually have a marketing as expensive as the movie itself, but we can be nice and say that the marketing only was 50% of the budget, so that is 240 million for making and "selling" this movie. Then the studio does not get every damn penny. Remeber that for each ticket sold, around 40%, sometimes more, sometimes less goes to the cinema. With some simple math it made around 260 million. So 20 million profit? Well then we have China which are weird because they take even MORE of the ticket price so no, in the end it did not break even. Maybe I am wrong with the China stuff because Legendary studios were part of making Warcraft and China owns that so maybe they did not take more of the ticket price because of this. But still, in the end I was nice and said we would use 50% of the marketing budget which I do not think they did. So yeah, this movie did lose money. Duncan Jones the director even said himself that the movie would need like 500 million USD to break even.

The movie completely "bombed" in the US. Did kind of average in Europe. If not for the far east, particularly China, the movie would've lost $$$. I seriously doubt there will be a sequel.

we are more likely to see remake of wc3

They had 1 chance to make a great movie and it shouldve been about Arthas. Instead they picked a story which requires 90% CGI. I enjoyed the movie, it was ok. But i doubt there will ever be a 2nd one.

A movie about Arthas and the fall of Lordaeron would have been a much easier sell than completely fake looking orcs with anime fights.

it more than broke even, it made a lot of money, the "budget" usually involves a bank account with $100,000,000 or so which is never used or intended to be used, but is there just to reduce the payout based on how much money the movie makes for the people being paid that way

you can take a flat salary, you can be paid a % of the profit or a % of the gross

it's how every movie does that pays people that way, it saves them money and is legal and the money in the bank actually draws interest too

the movie was profitable, the public numbers are supposed to look as shitty as possible, any movie that makes $433,000,000 made money

Make Warcraft a series of Movies (Not just 1 WC2 movie, like 2 WC2 movies or so, as well as 2-3 WC3 Movies), then make WoW into a Series like Game of Thrones (Except, there are more episodes in each season).

  8. #48
the movie was little more than a 3 hour advert for WoD that people had to pay to see. it didn't do especially well and it didn't do much to help WoW sales or subscriptions either so it's unlikely we'll see another

Most people don't seem to know that Blizzard had nothing to do wirh the movie. It's upon the studio executives of Legendary pictures to decide whether they wanna do a sequel or not. Since it was both a critical and financial misfire it's very unlikely. They didn't even release an extended cut on dvd.

  11. #51
    Nope.
The party who made the movie and WoD tie-in have lost, both their projects lost big, and they were fired from Blizzard. The movie director was fired from Legendary. No one will ever touch that franchise again.

It turned out to be not as successful in China as reported as there was a lot of fraud and playing with numbers by the Chinese studio that partly owned the movie. They claimed theaters that were closed because of flooding, or no lonmger in business sold out. Some theaters they claimed had sold 200% more tickets then they could seat.

Flopped fairly badly in NA, was received alright in EU and was most successful in China but even then financially it failed to break even with movie sales revenue. Critics panned it as LOTR-lookalike and didn't particularly enjoy the way the CGI was done with the real actors, an opinion shared by a sizeable number of movie goers who weren't particularly wow'd (lol) by it. Not to mention that only diehard fans of the series really enjoyed it but even then still had some grumblings about the drastic lore changes and the "movie universe is separate from the game universe" comment. All in all it's unlikely they'll do a Warcraft 2 movie, especially when the Director voiced some grievances in an interview about doing the film quite some time after Warcraft's release.

Should it go to movie status, the team would be much larger.
Jungle Book was a massive success compared to Warcraft. It's all about money and money didn't work for the Warcraft movie.

Tbh I'd love to have a 2 or 3 season series like Game of Thrones or Legend of the Seeker to cover the Warcraft story instead of a movie. One can dream. If Netflix or HBO would do this it would have better qualities than any Hollywood movie though.

It was a failure here but China saved the movie financially. I guess a country that sells shit to other country can also buy shit from them.

I wouldn't mind a Warcraft 2 but it wasn't a blockbuster hit so I doubt we'll see it. Maybe some cheap version made in China since it did well there but not here in the US. They'd be wasting more money if they did. The biggest problem this movie had was the fact that hardly anyone knew what it was or what was even going on. People just saw it as some Lord of the Rings type of fantasy movie.

I think they got a little full of themselves when they came up with the idea of making Warcraft into a movie. They probably thought they were well known enough that they could start being the new Star Wars by making all kinds of movies, toys, and books. Not only that but since it went into Hollywood's hands of course it got Hollywoodized by adding in nonsensical romance and altering the lore to fit the director's vision. This is why video game based movies are never successful because Hollywood feels the need to change so much to fit their needs and wants until the movie becomes completely different.

If studios can make a Sharknado 5 than Blizz can sure as hell do a Warcraft 2.

I liked the first movie alot and don't give a rats a$$ about the critics. Was a little bothered by the retcons but that is par for the course with Blizz these days.

Honestly, I really enjoyed the film. Aside from Travis Fimmel (who I don't think it a bad actor, just not the right fit for Lothar), the casting was perfect. Unfortunately, it clearly suffered from the stigma of being a "Video Game Movie" and having too much studio interference. You'd think after so many failures, these studios would realize they need to let the Director do their goddamn job... I'd love to see all the original cast back if they do (and I hope) make a sequel. Yes, even Travis back, but only if he changes his character slightly.

What the hell are you talking about? It cost $160 million, and made $433.7 million in box office sales alone. Yes it did poorly in the US, but that can be blamed on the studio's horrid advertising campaign and interfering with Jones' vision. It made more than enough to warrant a sequel. I just think Blizzard is trying to figure out how to play it safer this time. It wouldn't surprise me if they announced something about a sequel at BlizzCon.
