Cost of rent in your area?

Hey folks, I've been going through some serious trouble with rent lately. Long story short, I'm in a 2-bed apartment outside of Portland, OR. My roommate disappeared about 3 months ago, and I've been covering rent on this place by myself, $1,350 total. It's been tight, but I can handle.

So he finally reappeared, and we agreed he would move out and get off the lease. So I tried getting another roommate in the meantime. He failed the application because he had an eviction. The current situation is that my current roommate can't get off the lease unless I can qualify for the rent myself, which is 2.2x a full month's rent - about $2,780, or I can get another roommate on. I make almost $1,000 less than that a month. I pointed out to them that I've been paying rent by myself for 3 months now, but that doesn't seem to matter. So I discussed moving into a 1-bed. Their 1-beds cost about what I'm paying for a 2! So again I couldn't qualify. I'm sorry, but if I was making damned near $3,000 a month, I would NOT be living in this apartment complex.

Which brings me to my point. The price of living is outgrowing the income of the people who would actually live there. Why? Why is this a thing? Rent should not cost you 70%+ of your fucking monthly income, that's just stupid. The 1-beds in other complexes around here are similar - about $1,100 or more a month. For a ONE. BED. APARTMENT. There's even a complex being built near the Nike WHQ campus that has STUDIOS at almost $1,400! Less than 300 square feet!

So, what is rent like in your area? Has it gotten out of hand like this too? Do you hear a lot of complaints about it, or about your current complex charging too much?

Quick google search brought this up for my area.

Large coastal city, everyone wants to live by the ocean for some reason.

Brand new 2 bedroom here is $1000 or so a month.

Our housing market sucks down here, great times if you're a cash buyer otherwise get used to being a peasant.

Mean wage in my country is around 370 euros (437$) while minimum is around 232 euros (274$).
My girlfriend finished her masters in Biochemistry and is working on her PhD on something something how the body reacts to bio implants and what materials/structures are going to be used in the next generation of implants (like hip, etc.). Her wage is 232 euros (going to be cut to 160 euros this month) and she gets a PhD grant of 300 euros (going to be increased to 350 euros this month).
I make enough money to cover everything and got a degree, working on my 2nd right now, but there's no way I'll ever have a "normal" job in my country.

A studio (aka 1 room, small kitchen and small bathroom) that's under my apartment is 290 euros/month. I made enough money (thanks video games) to own my 72 sq meter (775 sq feet) apartment (1 bedroom, 1 living room, a decent sized kitchen, 1 bathroom) but if I were to rent it, I'd be looking at around 400-450 Euros a month.

You make enough money to cover a 2 bedroom apartment by yourself and still have some left at the end of the month, I'd say you're doing pretty good.

I paid $405 a month for my apartment when I lived in it. Was a 2 bedroom apartment but they locked one bedroom and rented it to me as a 1 bedroom.

800/month for a shitty 1br here, currently renting a 2.5br 1ba bungalow in a breakfront HOA for 1200/month, but the place is a dump and the landlord is a huge jerk.

Wife and I are trying to move, not enough house for the money, especially since we have 2 kids and it's not a great neighborhood for playing outside (tiny yards, people doing 50 mph on their way to the beach, etc).

Like 2 neighborhoods away, you can get a comparable house in the same (excellent) school district, but on a half acre, 20 years newer, and with a second bathroom and a 2 car garage, for about the same price (200-250k).

I moved from Sweden to Zakopane (southern Poland) for it's beautiful mountains just 7 days ago! Apartments and food is maybe half what it is back in Sweden. I've made a living online for 3 years so it doesn't matter where I live. I came here for the nature but the lesser cost is a bonus, especially food. My apartment is 400 euro a month and that's expensive here where nobody wants to pay more than maybe 250 which is why I had nobody to compete with. Then again average wages here in poland is as low as 500 euro a month, maybe 1000 if you got a good job.

Sorry you have to pay that much :S I thought most places in US were decent depending on location though? Get outta there quick!

    @masterhorus8 I didn't know Irvine ran 1700+ for studios!

The house we rent is a 5 Bed and 2 Bathroom place for 1,200 a month without utilities. My girlfriend's apartment is 700 a month utilities included. It sounds insane, but Manitoba has probably the lowest cost of living in North America. There isn't all that much here, but I am grateful for that.

Google says it's 3500 on average, but I'm pretty sure you can find some flat for around 2500.

Romania, the land of choice! It's a pretty nice place to live if you are above a certain income, in my current situation I wouldn't change it for anything else.

    Here's a pretty accurate article:
    https://www.romaniaexperience.com/wh...mania-in-2017/

Here are the best paying jobs in the country in 2016 (take-home average salary per month):

    1. IT: 5,340 RON (1,185 Euros per month)
    2. Oil extraction: 4,829 RON (1,070 Euros per month)
    3. Heavy industry: 4,450 RON (985 Euros per month)
    4. Insurance and private pensions: 4,309 RON (955 Euros per month)
    5. Banks: 4,280 RON (950 Euros per month)

I make around 4000 Euros per month from LoL related stuff mostly and 3d printing stuff for dental cabinets. If this ever stops I can go into IT with a bit higher wage than the average so meh.

    Why would one do that?

$575 for a shitty 1 bedroom/1 bathroom apartment 30 miles from Portland ME. And that's cheap. It's usually around $700-800.
