    Sentence enhancers

Why do people have such a problem with sentence enhancers? I'm talking about cuss words. Why are so many people so offended by words that don't actually hurt anybody? You say fuck in a conversation and people look at you like you just cut their hands off. Do you have a problem with cuss words? If you do then why?

I swear like a drunken sailor, having a problem with it would make me the world's biggest hypocrite by far

The words are mostly abusive swear words, meaning their purpose is primarily to hurt, objectify, insult, humiliate and marginalise disfavoured people. That is most swear words primary purpose and how they are mostly used so naturally they have severe negative connotations in every aspect.

That is why people don't like them in the first place.

Using them is frankly bad manners and bad social conduct, which is why most people who use them regularly out of context and where swear words take up most of their daily vocabulary are typically seen as rude, socially inept people.

Eh... they do lose their effect after a while. I've talked to gamers online who would spend a good third of their phrases with "sentence enhancers" (loved this name, btw). It was so tiresome... When all phrases are enhanced, it looses its punch and all you get is a longer phrase.

I'm sure that's not the reason people object, but it is a good thing cuss words are kept in check.

I started living in english approximately 6 years ago, and I have noticed that each year, I curse less than the year before. It mostly comes down to making up for a lack of fluency by putting the word fuck in there for effect, in my experience. So yeah, I used to do it a lot and it becomes a hard habit to stop, but I am using them less and less. They don't bother me, but if the person that constantly curses is speaking in their native language, I do tend to judge automatically.

What the freak ever. All words can do that, not just the ones you freaking think do.

Are you a robot OP? I keep seeing you ask odd questions worded unusually. Swearing is something acceptable amongst friends but not so with strangers, that say I swear regularly

AFAIK they're called interjections, not sentence enhancers.

I think it's funny how many Americans can be entirely fine with TV having live feeds from violent situations like a car chase ending with a shoot-out, or E-sports where the contestants play a shooter, but if a contestant or someone on the live feed says "fuck!!", they'll be outraged...

I don't have a problem with cuss words, but I don't swear in normal conversations either. My use of curse words tend to be very tied to what I want to say/my feelings. I'm an adult though, so I won't lose all senses and go full-mode SJW if someone else uses curse words in everyday speech.

Because they don't add anything meaningful and makes you sound like either an ass, or a child who just discovered bad words.

That is incorrect as I said, swear words primary purpose is to do that.

That's what makes them different from other words. It's not that hard to understand unless you're being purposefully ignorant of the purpose of swear words.

That is the definition of a swear word; to be offensive.

    Let's not be ignorant here.

If you use curse words all the time they lose their potency. Save curse words for an emergency or an important event something like that.

Also they can make you look dumber than you are.

It's more annoying when folks are shit talking and then switch in PG rated words like "kick butt" or "freakin". The only exception is when Randy Bobandy tells people to frig off.

The words themselves aren't the issue. They convey a strong opinion, and that's about it. And in a lot of cases, the "swear word" is the proper English term.

Take "shit". The only proper true English alternative to "shit" is "crap". Every other word is a borrowed word from another language, or a made-up kid-friendly slang term like "doodie". Or a word for a specific type of shit, like "manure" or whatever.

"Shit" and "crap" are "bad words" because shit is gross. And that's about it. Using another language's word, like "feces" or "excrement" or whatever, was a way to get your audience to have to take a moment to translate it in their heads, originally, which softened it a bit. Now that they've become regular English, it's just pointless linguistic wankery.

We'd be better served by teaching kids that these are "rude words", rather than "bad words" that should never be spoken.
