With all the faction fuckery in Battle for Azeroth, I've been thinking...what if in the expansion after BFA they just update the old world like they did in Cataclysm?
This idea was floating over here before the expansion announcement, but after BFA it makes even more sense to update the old world to show things like the new situation with the Night Elves and the Forsaken or to implement World Quests, so let me throw some ideas.
I don't know what was the idea behind destroying Teldrassil and Undercity for Blizzard, I don't know if they think that there are too many cities or if they just want to concentrate the Horde in Kalimdor and the Alliance in Eastern Kingdoms, personally I think that the old world needs a "definitive" revamp, one that would make sense even with future expansions.
The zones should have more simple closed storylines, a story that begins with the zone and ends in the same zone, maybe use it to seed need characters for the future, but without leaving the story too open and without things like outposts on fire eternally and stuff like that. Just less epic stories, with their "feet on the ground" so to speak, this is 1-60 after all.
Here is the map of the Idea

GENERAL CHANGES
Starting Zones
All the initial zones for every race would show you the culture and history of the race from 1 to 10, things like the Night Elves telling you about their past, the War of the Ancients, the creation of the World Trees, the destruction of Teldrassil; the Orcs showing you things like their past sins with Mannoroth's blood, their bloodlust, shamanistic roots and fighter personalities.
I think the starting zone of every race in every RPG should tell you what that race is all about, so you playing the first time understand the culture and the motivations of that people.
Horde focus on Kalimdor and Alliance focus on Easter Kingdoms
If Blizzard wants to make Kalimdor Horde-centric and EK Alliance-centric, I love it, it gives the factions more personality, so in this idea every red zone in the map would have Horde-only questing and every blue zone would have Alliance-only questing, yellow would be Neutral.
The idea here is to mimic what they want to do in BFA, once you reach max lvl you can go to the zones of the other faction to do World Quests, or events or something like that. They could create World PvP world quests in places with faction frontiers like between Ashenvale and Fellwood with some special currency to try to create world PvP for example.
The Neutral zones would be mostly in the South of the continents, with a traveling connection between them and they would be the high-level zones, 40-60 or something like that.
Goblins and Worgen new starting zones
To bring everything to the present the Worgen could start in the present Gilneas and the Goblins in Azshara, giving you the option to talk with an NPC to experience the old starting zones if you want to(because right now those 2 are already instanced) as if they where a story about the past of your race, helping with the whole thing about telling you things about your race and culture in the starting zones.
Cataclysm zones integrated
With the introduction of scaled leveling, there is no need to keep some zones in the old world separated from the rest of the continent, so Hyjal, Uldum, Vashj'ir and Twilight Highlands would be integrated into the 1-60 experience, like for example using Hyjal as the new starting zone for the Night Elves. With Deepholm I don't know what to do xD
NIGHT ELVES
Now that Teldrassil is gone, I think there is a good chance for Blizzard to embrace the Night Elves a little bit giving them a new starting zone in Hyjal, they could create a small "City" around Nordrassil with a mixture of that greek old night elf architecture and the tree houses, and some decoration surrounding the Well of Eternity like in the War of the Ancients 5-man dungeon.
To not have problems with Firelands and the reputation from Cataclysm, the southern lava zone of Hyjal could be Neutral, with the Cenarion Circle and the ancients defending it, so if you want to go back and rise that reputation, you can do it, or if you want to enter in the Firelands raid, the portal is still there.
Winterspring would be full Night Elf without the goblins there and the North of Felwood would have an open path to the sea with a little harbor that you could use to go to Azuremist, Stormwind or Gilneas.
THE FORSAKEN
If in the end Undercity is gone, the Forsaken would retreat to Silvermoon, recovering the zone north of Eastern Plagelands called Northeron and creating a small "City" with the Forsaken architecture and a harbor to go to Kalimdor, from there they would go to Ghostlands, Eastern Plaguelands, Western Plaguelands, Hinterlands and Arathi.
Eastern Plaguelands would be controlled by a mixture of Forsaken and Blood Elves, with the now reformed Order of the Silver Hand secluded in Light's Hope Chapel, Tyr's Hand and New Avalon as a mini-zone like the one in Hyjal, just to allow you to get old reputations and rewards.
Western Plaguelands would be no longer plagued at all and mostly controlled by the Forsaken + Blood Elves, the Bulwark would be a faction frontier with a never-ending war between Alliance and Horde.
Hinterlands would be controlled by Blood Elves + Forest Trolls (new allied race?), Aerie Peak would be a Faction Frontier with confrontations between Alliance and Horde.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is it for now, I just wanted to share this idea, I don't think that Blizz will do a revamp again sadly but I would kill for a revamp with more normal stories, something more RPG and a story that doesn't tell you "Oh! look what the cataclysm did" when the Cataclysm happened years ago.
