    Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

Basically, my friend's Elemental Shaman isn't performing optimally. So I thought I'd ask for a piece of your infinite wisdom.

    Armory linkage

    With thanks in advance,

WTB more info than "Not functioning optimally"

Is he having bad dps, it would probably be because of his gear, he might aswell try getting hit capped (368 hit)

And for the spec: IMP. shields is not needed, would be better to put at least one point into convection for 5/5 and the last he can just put wherever he wants, as he doesn't seem to want Eye of The Storm (less spell pushback)

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

Right, I forgot. He's pulling only 2.8-2.9k DPS, and we think it could be higher.

We've just added some extra hit by messing with gems, wait for the Armory to update. Didn't think anybody would be so fast, honestly.

    For Alliance

Hit cap with boomkin/spreist is 263
Hit cap without these buffs is 341

    his hit is fine

Outside of that, yeah gear is their major concern right now. Not one tier item and seeing as you can now buy t8 2pc with badges you should really have that at the very least. If you do have a boomkin/spreist in raid then you need to lose a lot of hit, you could probably get rid of the mark in favour of a better trinket.

Totem of electrifying winds is better than hex but you might want to hold off that one and invest badges into teir9 items instead.

Basically this guy is fresh out of heroics, everything needs to be upgraded. The best any of us can do is advise on what stats to look for.

Anything with Spirit is a waste
Anything with MP5 is a waste

    Look for items with

    INT
    STAM
    SP
    Haste
    Crit

Hit caps are mentioned above so once you meet those targets dont get any more hit.

Any other stat is pretty much useless to us

    Gems,
    39sp (JC Gem) x3
    23sp
    12sp 15stam x2 (to activate the meta)

    Talents

dunno why he decided to stick 2 points in imp shields but ok... take those points out and put them into Eye of the Storm, take 1 point from convection and also put it into Eye of the storm. You can drop the Flame Shock Glyph now in favour of glyph of totem of wrath (which you should have had in place of glyph of lava anyway) now that the patch has gone live.

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

    Gear:
    -missing cloak enchant
-50sp instead of 63 on weapon
-missing extra socket from belt buckle

    Talents:
-Improved fire nova totem sucks for pve
-eye of the storm helps more that you think
-improved shields arent needed, because shamans just cant go oom.
    http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?sham...8iNOttz,,10482
this is the talent build i use and i suggest your friend to use it too.

    Fights:
-use lava burst always when off cooldown. and never use it without having flame shock on the target
-use chain lightning on aoe fights always when it's off cooldown.
-having flame shock on more targets also help with dps.
    - if you see that your target is on low hp change to another, flame shock it, then cast CL so it will also hit the previous target. then continue on your new target. previous one will die soon because of raid/group aoe.
-if there are more mobs next to you use thunderstorm.
-sometimes it's worth replacing totem of wrath with magma totem, but make sure mobs are in it's range.
-dont forget wrath of air totem to boost your casting speed.

    Glyphs:
-replace glyph of flame shock with glyph of totem of wrath. it gives you extra 90 sp, which is very nice. and it stays on even if you replace ToW with magma totem.

this is all i can think of atm.
    Here comes the pain bitch

Most of your post is correct (could argue with the spec, but meh... if you're on that gear level, 6% less damage taken won't matter much), but I have to veto on this one.
For FS to be worthwile, it'd have to do more damage than LB. (yes, LB...)
Reasoning behind LB and not CL: You have to switch your target, which costs time... even if it's just a little... and it's really hard to do it without this.

So... take your average LB. Add in the Crit-Chance, Crit-Damage & Overload.
Compare that damage to the damage your average FS-hit (including Crit-Chance/Crit-Damage), + 6x DoT-Damage.

Now... when you neither have T8 2pc (or new FS-Glyph), nor T9 2pc... it'll be quite hard for FS as a whole to hit harder than a LB.

So no, having FS on multiple targets does not always help with dps. (especially when you can cast CL and when it can hit more than one target... your FS will have real problems doing more damage than CL)

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

First and foremost we can work this that gear of his first as mentioned a lot before. He's missing enchants on pieces and extra socketing (belt) for more DPS. General rule of thumb on gear for elemental is (in highest priority):
    • Hit (until hit capped)
    • Spellpower
    • Haste
    • Crit
    • Intellect
    • Stamina
It's hard to avoid spirit or mp5 sometimes just because through rawr programs they can be Best in Slot but there is always an alternative for the pieces. He looks like he just came from some heroics and some Naxx10. There are quite a few good pieces from ToC both normal and heroic that will boost his stats considerably.

Since your shaman friend is alliance, he should be getting hit capped at 263 through gear alone if he can but otherwise enchant for hit then to gems if needed. Although the JC hit gems are really nice since they are a hefty chunk, the JC spellpower ones are better. 2 blue gems are needed for the meta so using Glowing Dreadstone is better than using Royal Dreadstone since mp5 will never be an issue for elemental.

There really isn't that much change in glyphs he needs. Glyph Totem of Wrath is better at his level of gear over Glyph of Lava. Extra 84 spellpower benefits all his spells oppose to increasing the spell power coef of one spell.

Give him a good week or two on grinding some gear from heroics (T8.5 2pc, maybe a piece of Ilvl232 T9 if he's doing the heroic daily and getting into normal ToGC10) and test his DPS. If he's still struggling on DPS with better gear, it could come down to rotation, being comfortable for the fight, movement, etc.

Edit: Have your shaman friend take a loot at the Elitistjerks Forums, it's full of good information for Shamans and other classes. I do warn though that it can get heavy on theorycrafting but it is a good source of information. http://elitistjerks.com/f79/

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

You should use Sp/Stam for your blue gems for the meta.
    Shoulder enchant is bad.
    Trinkets are bad.
    No cloak enchant.
    Way over the hit cap.
Glyph of Flame Shock > Glyph of Lava at your gear level.
You might be using a bad rotation or something, but the above is the most I can gather from just an armory.

The person OP linked is fresh out of Heroics obviously. 3k DPS is fine considering his gear. You want him to put out better DPS? Get him better gear.

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

    Gearing optimal as elemental shaman:
-- Get ~520 haste in order to get "soft haste capped". (Your Lightning bolt rotation should match exact on the next LvB, stacking it more is a DPS decrease untill you can get another LB to fit in.)
-- Get hit capped, 13% as draenei (10% with boomkin or spriest in raid), I assume it's 14% for other races without hit racial.
    -- STACK SP.

That's about it, keep FS up, use LvB when you can (ensure FS is up) then spam LB, and if you can you might want to use a CL in the end if it fits the cooldown on LvB better.
In other words: FS > LvB > LB.

Check his Achievements. He's been to Naxx and parts of Ulduar already. Hell, he's wearing two pieces Uld gear.

    /slap
This is Not Correct. There are no required haste values, plateaus, or anything of the sort.

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

520 is the number where your LB's are around 1.6 fitting neatly into a rotation. There are no more patchwerk type bosses so moar everything is better and "extra" haste isnt a waste.

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

Don't underestimate the benefits of getting tier set bonuses. And even if you can't get a ToC25 run, grind dailies until you get the 245ILvl haste totem...

    Re: Advice wanted: Elemental DPS

    1. Try to get more haste to increase the no of LBs between LvBs. ToEW is a good start with the very high uptime on haste buff [Totem of Electryfing Wind = 25 Emblems]
    2. Keep in mind that you only need 10% hit for raids when you got moonkin/SP with IFF/Misery [or 11% if hordie]
    3. Move 2 points from Improved Fire Nova Totem to 5/5 Convection.
    4. Minimize/have none hit gems, enchants or take +hit/+int/+crit socket bonuses.
    5. Change LvB glyph to ToW glyph as you do not have the required spell power for it nor the T9 4pc bonus to make it worth. As i see now u should have about 2.7k sp fully buffed which is way too low for LvB glyph.
    6. Use a cast bar and class specific addons.
    7. Minimize moving during fights to maximize your overall casting time.
    8. Read forums

That's a bit of a silly statement. It depends entirely on what items he has as to whether it's better to gem to the hit cap or not, and red/yellow gem combos with crit bonuses can actually be better than just going red/red
