Possibly a lame idea but I want to share it anyway! Passwords for Guild Banks.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned this before, though, it kinda came to me because of all the hacking that has been going on lately.

My friend's account got hacked a few days ago, took all his stuff, and since him and I own a guild with like 4 tabs full of stuff, of course he had access and well, they stole all the goods from in there as well.

I thought that this might help prevent it.

What if Blizzard came out with a password system for Guild Banks? Something that you would set upon creating a new guild and only the guild leader would be able to change it or something? I'm sure some of you would ask, well, what if I forgot it? Then, the safest way would be to put a ticket in to either change it or retrieve but after filling out some information or something?

The password would have to be given out to all members of course that would need access to the bank, though, it could only be for when someone tries to take out items that they would get prompted to enter the password. This way, members can still deposit without worry and hackers wouldn't be able to easily rob guild banks as well? the whole permissions would stay in place of course.

I don't know, just an Idea. Possibly lame. Just throwing it out there.

The problem with this is the problem with everyone finding workarounds instead of solving the root problem. Why not abolish hackers instead of finding workarounds to live amongst them? That being said I personally in 4 years of playing this game authenticator-less and having a high profile account do not even believe that hackers exist. There are simply people careless with their account information, and people eager to take advantage of them.

It's a neat idea, but it would never be implemented. After all theres a tool to avoid being hacked, ever.

    Authenticator

    Mandatory authenticators.

If they log the password of the account, how hard would it be to log the password for the Guild Bank as well?

Exactly, it would be just as easy.

This wouldn't solve anything anyway. What people call "hackers" aren't, they just manage to get hold of your password by using keyloggers, phishing or social engineering (which is the scientific term for "taking advantage of stupid people").

So there's no reason to believe that they couldn't also get hold of your bank password. In fact, since that password would have to be known by pretty much everyone in the guild, it would more easily leak to a third party than your account password that in theory only you should know.

Its actually very good idea . It will decrease the number of guild banks robbed thats for sure...

Add into guild rules following: If you don't have authenticator in your account (easy to verify by summoning the Core Hound Pup), you will have no withdraw access to guild bank.

Works 100% with current game, only problem is GM not having authenticator, but in that case you might want to reconsider who's the GM...
Never going to log into this garbage forum again as long as calling obvious troll obvious troll is the easiest way to get banned.
    Trolling should be.

Yes, I do agree on Authenticators and am getting on in the mail any day now (Thank God). When they hacked my friend's account, they attached an authenticator onto it so he couldn't even log onto his own account anymore. (Though he did get a core hound out of it! LOL!) and he himself is getting an authenticator as well.

It's just some crazy idea that even with the added security of Authenticators, might help prevent thefts in game as well such as a guild member deciding to rob the GBank and then ditch or something.

What they should do is package an authenticator with Cataclysm and make it so it so you can't play without one. I already have one and I wouldn't mind having a backup if needed.

This is a very good point in my opinion. Being a GM myself of 2 guild (ones an alt banking one), the whole fact of this happening has really kinda scared me which finally convinced myself to get the authenticator. I'd probably cry if my account got hacked and characters were deleted and all robbed of their gear and items.

5 thumbs up for this idea! This would help reduce of lot of hacking. Though, I can see some people being too lazy to use it. Though, their loss!

How? If he'd have access to rob it, he'd know the PW aswell.

    Good idea.

and make it so it so you can't play without one.
That would be pointless and annoying.
If I don't want to bother carrying an authenticator around to be able to log in the game at the risk of being hacked, it's my problem, not yours.
It's not like getting hacked affects anyone else than the guy being hacked. Heck, I'd be ok with making authenticators mandatory to withdraw from guild banks, but not with making them mandatory full stop.

Not necessarily though possible. I did mention about everyone having accessing to the guild bank, but would need the password to take anything out. So any newbies can't join and expect to quickly and easily rob the GBank unless they have been in the guild long enough or did something to prove they can handle the password. Either that or the GM is too trusting and gives it to everyone. :P

lame idea? hell no i've been hoping for something like this for ages. and not just for GB, but for officer powers as well, like a small login you have to do before your officer powers are available.

Better idea. Sell Cataclysm pre-installed on a 32GB flash drive (With Vanilla, TBC, WotLK too) that DOUBLES as the authenticator. 32GB should be enough to allow you to patch and store add-ons etc. AND you can carry wow with you everywhere you go!!

Bad idea, would cost too much. and hackers could find the algorithm for your authenticator if there was storage on it.

Just because there is storage doesn't mean they can get your authenticator key. Think about how a USB hub work - multiple devices send data through one port. You could make the authenticator and the storage completely independent of each other. And too expensive? They can charge me a premium for it...I didn't say they couldnt also sell it on DVD. It could be like a collector's edition bonus as well as a standalone product.
