It's often just single lines that *click* when it comes to lyrics. Deepest songs to me tend to be instrumentals. Human language is not capable of effectively expressing all the feelings.

The Midnight Beast - Lez Be Friends
I cant work out why the girls dont fancy me

Im the best looking boy in sight no hang on
I bet she likes boobies right?

If a girl wont come round
    (She must be a lesbian)
    Or turns me down
    (She must be a lesbian)
    If she dont like me
    (She must be a lesbian)
    Ill let her down lightly
    (You must be a lesbian)

    If a girl wont kiss
    (She's taking the piss)
    Or get down with this
    (I can't believe this)
    If she doesnt fancy me
She must bat for the other team

    Nuff said.

    but seriously though

    Nine Inch Nails - Hurt

    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know
    Goes away in the end
    You could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
    Upon my liar's chair
    Full of broken thoughts
    I cannot repair
    Beneath the stains of time
    The feelings disappear
    You are someone else
    I am still right here

I think from lyrics alone should be able to say why.

until the end - avenged sevenfold
    -------------------------------------
Weekends on young and angry streets
We meet, drink 'till trouble found us there
Living life as without a care
We've had our fights, been black and blue
Its true, I've even gone to jail for you my friends
Bet your life that I'd do it again

    (Until the End)

Don't change the way you think of me
    We're from the same story
Life moves on, can't stay the same
But some of us, I'm worried, yeah

While some have gone their separate ways
There's some still caught up with the past
and stead to move on, you're missing most of your life
They say its hard to stay the same
When some fail, while other men seem to gain, but friends
I'll be with you here until the end

    (Until the End)

Don't change the way you think of me
    We're from the same story
Life moves on, can't stay the same
But some of us, I'm worry

    We're all falling forward
    With no signs of slow
    Some moving faster
    Thats all that I wanted
    I wanted

    I know its hard
    Its passing by
    Memories
    Be out all night
so reminisce won't bring you back
Just look ahead and hold on tight

    We're all falling forward
    With no signs of slow
    And some moving faster
    Thats all that I wanted
    I wanted

Don't change the way you think of me
    Oh yeah

    Until the end
    Until the end
    Until the end
    Until the end

    Alexi Murdoch - Something Beautiful

Oddly enough, I'm agnostic. The song isn't really about a specific god in particular, but rather an expression of purpose on earth. I have to agree with Keoren though, lyrics tend sometimes not to convey everything.

    I remember loving the song when it came out and not really thinking so much about the lyrics. I recently heard it again and it made me realize that those lyrics are pretty much my reality now. Well, not that any of my closest friend shave committed suicide or taken an overdose, but still it kinda speaks to me in a way. Like;

"When we were young the future was so bright
The old neighborhood was so alive
And every kid on the whole damn street
Was gonna make it big in every beat"

    and then there's;

"Jenny had a chance, well she really did
Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids
Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job
He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot"

It sounds really alot like some of my best friends from back in the days.

    New Slang by the Shins

"Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall,
    Never should have called
But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely."

The summer before this one currently ending I had a summer where I didn't do much of anything. I was a nocturnal person and always saw the morning dawn break at the same spot in my home. I learned how to be an independent person, more than I was before because I was quite lonely that summer.

    Where do i begin? lol.

    YOU FOUND ME - FRAY
I found God on the corner of 1st and Amistad
Where the West was all but won
All alone, smoking his last cigarette
I said, "Where you been?" He said, "Ask anything"
Where were you when everything was falling apart?
All my days were spent by the telephone that never rang
And all I needed was a call that never came
To the corner of 1st and Amistad

    BURN - NIN
Something inside of me has opened up its eyes
Why did you put it there did you not realize
This thing inside of me it screams the loudest sound
    Sometimes i think i could
I'm gonna burn this whole world down

    THE PERFECT DRUG - NIN
    take me with you
    without you everything falls apart
it's not as much fun to pick up the pieces

    LIONS! - LIGHTS
    Lions make you brave
    Giants give you faith
    Death is a charade
You don't have to feel safe to feel unafraid

I CAN WALK ON WATER I CAN FLY - BASSHUNTER
I will never be afraid again
I will keep on fighting till the end
I can walk on water I can fly
I will keep on fighting till I die

Those are the ones that pop up off the top of my head.

Thing is, when lyrics get longer and longer the more chance there is they're not very touching with a small handful being successfully poetic. Shorter a specific literal piece is the more chance there is you can pinpoint a single important feeling or matter. Giving a hint for the general theme either musically or from the song title and then having a purely instrumental track gives the listener alot more freedom.

As an example I could use Devin Townsend Project's song Ih-Ah!. It's a very simple little song and while I do somewhat enjoy the what could be said cheesy lyrics as a whole there is a personal pearl in the middle of it all, the line "We don't even understand - so how could this be wrong?".

Another topic completely are lyrics that are (also) used and perceived in a way they support the song musically with the sound of the words alone.

That's why I chose the Alexi Murdoch song as the most meaningful to me =P. Only six lines in 5 minutes.

I think that can be interchangable. Often in music lyrics are the centerpiece and the music is what supports it, rather than the lyrics being the "missing part".

I meant lyrics which don't necessarily have any meaning, but are meant as "notes" for the human voice which is used similarly to any other instrument.

PS. I also think long lyrics are interpreted bit along the lines of poetry while short lyrics are rather felt without that much work. Different approach for the two also makes a difference.

Right, I'm retarded. They can accomplish the same thing as an instrument then, in my eyes.

Lamb of God: Walk with me in Hell

    Breath
    Breath

    Pray for blood
    Pray for the cleansing
    Pray for the flood
Pray for the end of this nightmare
This lie of a life can as quickly as it came dissolve

    We seek only reprieve
    And welcome the darkness
The myth of a meaning, so lost and forgotten

    Take hold of my hand
For you are no longer alone
    Walk with me in hell

    Pray for solace
    Pray for resolve
    Pray for a savior
    Pray for deliverance
Some kind of purpose, a glimpse of a light in this void of existence

    Oh...
Now witness the end of an age
Hope dies in hands of believers
Who seek the truth in the liar's eyes

    Take hold of my hand
For you are no longer alone
    Walk with me in hell

    Walk with me in hell
    Walk with me in hell
    Walk with me in hell
    Walk with me in hell
    Walk with me in hell

    Take hold of my hand
For you are no longer alone
    Walk with me in hell

    Walk with me in hell
    Walk with me in hell

    You're never alone
    You're never alone
    You're never alone

    You're never alone
    You're never alone
    Walk with me in hell

Just a powerful song for me.

It's still kinda hard to speak about it, and that's probably the reason why I am an asshole, i lost something precious to me, and was not our fault, let's leave it there.

I found the best way to avoid talking about something personal is to not mention it in the first place, assuming you really don't want to bring it up.

    Band: Digital Summer
    Track: Worth The Pain

Very rough childhood growing up (alcoholic parents), best friend at an early age (8) blew his head off with a shotgun right in front of me, mom died rather early (age 18) in my life due to a heroin overdose, alcoholic addiction, overcoming my old lady's OC addiction, as well as doing some really violent shit in my life I am not especially proud of. Just a few reasonings why this song holds importance to me, I'm sure I could write a full novel based upon my life very easily.

    Lyrics:

    Cover it all in kerosene,
Light a match and watch it,
    Burn everything
    (Everything)

    All that remains,
Where the pictures used to hang,
    Shattered glass and broken frames.
    (Broken frames)

So let the rain fall down,
    And wash away,
All the suffering from my mistakes.
    It’s taking everything,
    To just walk away,
‘Cause the memories aren’t worth the pain.

    (It’s not worth the pain)
    (It’s not worth the pain)
    (It’s not worth the pain)
    (It’s not worth the pain)

    Handful of pills to escape,
The nights that hold no sleep.
    An empty bottle to release,
    The thoughts and memories,
    Of everything…

    Buried beneath,
    This hollow shell of mine,
    The self-inflicted stain of it,
    Is killing me inside.
    (Killing me inside)

So let the rain fall down and wash away,
All the suffering from my mistakes.
It’s taking everything to just walk away,
‘Cause the memories aren’t worth the pain.

    (It’s not worth the pain)
    (It’s not worth the pain)

    And it feels like,
    I’m a million miles away,
But I still feel the pain.
    And I’d rather drown,
Than feel this for another day.
    It’s not worth the pain.

    Patience, by Guns N' Roses

Shed a tear 'cause I'm missing you,
    I'm still alright to smile.
Girl I think about you every day now.
    Was a time when I wasn't sure,
But you set my mind at ease.
There is no doubt you're in my heart now.

    Said woman, take it slow,
    It'll work itself out fine.
All we need is just a little patience.
    Said sugar, make it slow,
    And we'll come together fine.
All we need is just a little patience.

    Sit here on the stairs,
    'Cause I'd rather be alone.
If I can't have you right now, I'll wait, dear.
    Sometimes, I get so tense,
But I can't speed up the time.
But you know, love, there's one more thing to consider.

    Said woman, take it slow,
    Things will be just fine.
You and I'll just use a little patience.
    Said sugar, take the time,
'Cause the lights are shining bright.
You and I've got what it takes to make it.
We won't fake it, oh never break it,
    'Cause I can't take it..

I've been walking these streets at night,
Just trying to get it right.
It's hard to see with so many around,
You know I don't like being stuck in a crowd.
And the streets don't change but baby the name,
I ain't got time for the game,
    'Cause I need you.
Yeah, yeah well I need you.
    Oh, I need you.
    Whoa, I need...
    Ooh, this ti- me....

Was a girl I used to see, man she drove me up a fucking wall. She was so damn cynical, critiquing everything and everything, but even today I think all the time spent on her was more than worth it. This song I dedicate to her, and putting up with her shenanigans.

    Muse-Butterflies And Hurricanes

    Change everything you are
    And everything you were
    Your number has been called

    Fights and battles have begun
    Revenge will surely come
    Your hard times are ahead

Best, you've got to be the best
You've got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
    Your time is now

    Change everything you are
    And everything you were
    Your number has been called

    Fights and battles have begun
    Revenge will surely come
    Your hard times are ahead

Best, you've got to be the best
You've got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
    Your time is now

    Don’t let yourself down
    Don’t let yourself go
    Your last chance has arrived

Best, you've got to be the best
You've got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
    Your time is now.

This and the music gives the imagery of war, especially with 9/11 It's perfect.
