Running VoA and your 264 set piece drops. You roll, someone else rolls. You win the roll. Raid leader gives you the piece. A few seconds later another person who was afk or asleep rolls for it late and rolls higher.
What would you do?

We don't really think we need more caster hate in the game right now. - GC
keep it, he was afk for a bossfight? fuck him
He wasn't AFK for the fight. Just afterwards for the roll.

First I would check his numbers to see if he was at least pulling his own weight. If he missed the loot roll then he may well have been slacking even if you thought he was doing his part.
If he wasn't trying or was downright failing then I would probably keep it because I hate watching loot going to fails who don't belong in raids.
Otherwise, I don't know. It would probably depend on my mood. If he did comparable numbers to myself then I'd probably trade it since it is fair (especially if the loot master was in a hurry like some and rushed the roll in the first place).

Keep it. I'd also keep it if the raid leader gave it to me by accident.
Moral of the story : don't go AFK on loot.
I would also keep the item, it's his own fault for stepping away at a bad time.

you keep the item to teach him and everyone else a lesson. In an active raid environment you need to roll quickly and be done with it. In my guild ICC raids we are expected to be on our way to the next boss while loot is being dished out. So unless you guys were fighting mobs there is no reason for the delay.
I gave it to him. As soon as I gave it away I wished I hadn't.

Screw him. If it was a PUG I'd probably never see him again, and if I did I'd laugh because he;s an idiot. If it was a guildie and he needed it desperately more than me for progression purposes, I'd probably pass it over.
So long as he was pulling his weight for the gear he has, i'd have let him have it. Well, and assuming he wasnt an arse about it and started screaming and shouting and thrashing about in anger.
You don't know why he was afk. for all you know he could be epileptic and felt something bad coming on so had to look away from the flashing lights. Unlikley, but it could be anything, you know? Maybe his kid started crying and he needed to go make sure it was okay?
Pretty rough to expect people to never have a micro emergency, I suppose.
