    Re: In-Game Advertising coming soon.

    Imagine:

A few gold-crazy Goblins open up a few McDonalds fastfood restaurants in Azeroth. Those will be Goblin-styled buildings with the well known McDonalds logo. The interior is that of a fastfood restaurent, but in Goblin style. Chairs and tables and such are in Goblin style, though perhaps in McDonalds colors. You'd be able to buy food and drinks there. For example a Cheezeburger which restores 2% health a second. You'd meet other people there like in an inn and could even held some meetings there (guildmeetings, roleplay-meetings, whatever).
[EDIT]And Goblins are crazy enough to have the meat factory just around the corner, with a few cows still walking on some piece of land just next to the restaurant. Goblin humor FTW.[/EDIT]

To be honest, I think that kinda stuff could be pretty epic. Sure it's advertising, but it's not annoying and could even be entertaining and funny. Why is it, that when someone hears the word 'advertising', annoying pop-ups immediately pop-up in mind?

    Advertising in a game?

I'll tell you what, the minute I saw THAT Splintercell opening movie, it pissed me off before I even got to play the fucking game. I HATE blatant product placement in any and all media.

However, in one Splintercell game, the level is an enemies apartment, and there are Lynx products in the bathroom areas. That was not blatant. That was subtle, and I have no issue with that. Or the Powerade billboards in the Matrix PS2 game in the train station. They weren't blatant. IMO anyway.

It all depends how it is done with me.

Somebody said billbaords in Dalaran? A magical floating city, with advertising on the walls? Your kidding right? I'd quit. That would be taking the piss. WoW is not a universe that can accept advertising due to its time era and world atmosphere.

And I'm sure any addon's that block advertising would be deemed, "defacing the world environment" in the same way as AVR?

It would be a new low, and I'm sure that Blizz would be well aware of the consequences.

    Re: In-Game Advertising coming soon.

I personally have no problem with in game ads mixed into the game world in a non-gameplay and non-intrusive way. They would be things that blend in to the world like billboards or screens in a modern city.

I played City of Heroes and their ads didn't bother me at all, in fact they added more to the city. I remember flying around looking at different ads, sure they eventually get old but they change quite often if I remember right. Any extra revenue that doesn't come out of your pocket for a game that you play is a great thing, as long as it doesn't take away from gameplay. Especially true if the game is having financial trouble, which is not the case with any Blizzard game.

The only real way I could see advertising with wow is how they did it before, out of game for the most part, like the mountain dew's. It is a fantasy world with no logical place for quick non-intrusive advertising. The only logical place I would think would be in arenas, maybe a banner on the wall. I'm not too into lore, but the lore behind arena's seems shady at best..also not asking for an explanation. But, arenas are the most commercial part of wow, and a banner on the wall wouldn't add or take away from gameplay I doubt anyone would notice it twice.

Battle.net is for all blizzard games ^^
We won't see that shit in wow , but other newer games will probally make use of some form of ingame advertising.

It would annoy me to no end if "Ice Cold Milk" was rebranded "Cowgate" with a smily baby on it. Every time you drank it a baby laughter would be heared and a woman saying "does this sound like an unhappy child to you?"

I don't think that's what he meant. I think he meant more along the lines of Second Life but with superpowers.

Your wife gets superpowers when she kicks your ass for being out with your mates instead of watching Sex and the City with her for the umpteenth time.

This is more along the lines of when you use the internet you will get advertisements related to World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and more or less anything encompassed by that particular subsidiary of mocrosoft along with the usual ads that you would encounter. I do not see them using product placement or advertisements simply because it is unnecessary.

If this doesn't happen, the game is broken beyond horrific terrible belief and is not worth playing.

Don't see the problem here. The massive technology for ingame advertising is already used in Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2(because you dont pay for the online services for those games)
It's probably reffering to those games and not WoW. (People seem to forget that battle.net spans to more games than just wow)

Death to Bobby Kotick and those who support him.
If WoW ever got in game advertising I'd quit without hesitation.

I pay money to play a game to have fun, advertisments are contradictory to that.
However I have enough faith in Blizzard not to let their products be ruined by such ideas.

Because traditionally that's what advertising does: the creativity involved isn't as important as the constant message. Just in the top right corner of MMO-Champion is a big banner for MLG Gear. It's not really relevant to anything on the site, it's just there to remind you of a product to spend money on. Nothing else matters as long as the dollars come in.

TV ads scream at you to buy some bullshit - louder than the shows themselves. It's a platform to generate cash. That is why stations LOVE ratings, because it means people are watching the channel, and thus seeing the ads, meaning more companies want to get in on it. So the cycle continues.

The day this becomes more prevalent in games is the day entertainment can go fuck itself. I'll go back to playing in the mud where I don't get mind raped by shitty companies and their fucking useless products full of lies.
