Is there a way of abandoning a BM pet without having to respec back into BM? Kind of lame having to waste 50g just for that.

Not to my knowledge. Its only 50g Though, plus another 50g for respecing back.
You can tell WoW changed the MMO for good when players started complaining about the amount of time they sink, into a time sink.

Make a GM ticket saying you are broke and dont want to spend gold on a respecc. ask the GM to remove the Pet(s) you want removed.

Don't you usually make 4-5k gold from the quests in northrend? I know that you could've bought BoEs, but who buys BoEs for all their money?
Whatever, try making a ticket like ^ said, might work. Otherwise, ask friends for money, 100g isn't that much actually.

Like feigning mentioned, you don't have an open stable slot? It's not like letting a pet gather dust would harm you too much. Especially with the changes coming for Cataclysm (pet buffs, BM buffs, stable buffs), you may want the BM pet to experiment with BM. That way you won't have to worry about going out and re-leveling a pet for the 81-85 content.

I put in a ticket logged out and by the time i was back on my bm pets were gone.
