do you remember when mmoc datamined models with emerald dream in the name before wrath of the lich king? i wonder whatever became of those. but the video posted of the maelstrom in cata makes it look rather boring :/

i would think something along the lines of emerald dream would be interesting but i dont know how much content you can milk out of it unless its turned into a continent with that many people residing within with their own problems like killing boars and collecting cherries from pieces of poop. but that seems mighty far fetched. im more eager to see some sort of preview of blizzards new mmo before hearing about another expansion

The Great Sea. Also I wouldn't be surprised if there was another continent on the "other side" of azeroth. I can see it now: "ZOMG where did that large land mass with a diverse ecosystem and at least 2 intelligent races come from??!?!?!?"

Cataclysm is Maelstrom, as it were. They're putting it into the game. There are pictures. We will go there. So I very much doubt we'll see a separate expansion about it.

Remember the old, semi-fake list of zones for future expansions (semi-fake in that I don't think it was ever an official list, just a plan Blizzard had at one time, long ago):

It's notable that several of the zones predicted for the "final" expansion or so are actually in Cataclysm - Deepholme, Skywall, Abyssal Maw, etc.

Two sets of zones that we're likely to see eventually are notably absent:

1) The Emerald Dream zones.

2) The "Legion" zones.

We all know the Emerald Dream has problems, and Cataclysm seems to touch on that, but not focus on them. It's possible that we'll see the Emerald Dream added in to Cataclysm, but I think it's more likely that we'll see it, probably together with the Legion zones as a next, and likely kind of final, expansion, with Sargeras as the big bad.

There is still a concentrated, unmovable peice of it located at the rift of Aln

Hmmm, coulda sworn the book implied as much, WoW Wiki seems on the fence about it and my copy is at work...

Not really. It's been stated that Azshara, while having an influence in Cataclysm, will not actually appear in Cataclysm. Just because the Maelstrom is now visible to us doesnt mean we're actually going to go to it in this expansion. That, and, the fact that there is ONE underwater zone, and only a couple island zones we're going to, seems to suggest that the actual Great Seas expansion has yet to come. There's still a lot of islands and a lot of subzones within the Maelstrom that we aren't touching.

The Rift of Aln =/= The Rift. They're two "different" places. And, as Darkside has said, there is still a concentrated mass of stuff going on in the Dream. It was defeated, but not "killed".

Although...

Seeing as the Dream is supposed to be a mirror-image of Azeroth before the breaking, it's possible that the Rift of Aln is the area in the Dream where the Well of Eternity 'was' on Azeroth.

It is possible that its the portal to the maelstrom, iv always thought that thats how the old god in the maelstrom was corrupting the emerald dream, via secret portal

Since we already have a revamped Azeroth, underwater timed escort mission zone, Maelstrom and Azshara; I'd say Emerald Dream, Argus / Xoroth, The Twisting Nether.
