Blizzard creates their own GearScore-like system for Cata

They've implemented a GearScoring system into Cataclysm and are now assigning a number that they show when you try to queue up for a dungeon you aren't GearScored for.

Obviously, they don't/won't/can't call it GearScore, but essentially the concept is the same. Interestly, it counts any gear you have ever owned. The idea is to prevent people from trying to cheese the system and make themselves ineligible for tougher random dungeons (then switch to their real gear once inside). So your highest ever GearScore is recorded internally and used by the system to place you into appropriate dungeons.

This scoring system is in place on live, but they never showed you the actual internal number before (which appears to be nothing more than an average ILVL versus the GearScore addon which uses a weighted ILVL added up for each slot).

Counting their highest ilvl ever owned raises some issues such as running older heroics to gear up different specs though I'm not sure how they would work around this.

Like you said, the system is already there, you just can't see the requirements. So it's not really something new.

Ontopic: I think that have something similar implemented, like if you're a low GS you can't get thrown into heroic HoR

The main difference is Blizzard has dismissed the idea of GearScore (but never outright banned or officially given a negative statement on), so it's interesting they are using the same idea. You'd think they'd know better than anyone that gear gets you the last 20% of your production and the first 80% is skill. Great gear can only make a bad player into a slightly less bad player.

Honestly, I wish they would just hire the GearScore guy to implement it server-side and cut down on all the lag-creating inspects that the addon currently needs to work.

The irony is that the weighted-ilvl system that Gearscore uses is actually better than this average-ilvl system.

It's a guild perk that increases reputation gained from killing monsters and doing quests by a certain percent per rank.

Not really, Blizzard is trying to protect new players to enter dungeons they would seriously struggle with if they don't meet the average item level. GearScore and similar systems itself aren't that bad, but the way the community uses these tools is. Currently PUGs are requiring everyone to be massively overgeared, asking at least 1k GearScore more than is actually necessary. Worst thing I saw was a 5.7k GS requirement for ToC10.

So Blizzard went to pugchecker.com, said "This is cool!" and put it in the game?

...why would you need to do that, even if it worked?

Meh, I'd prefer if they just left the issue alone. Gearscore is a good tool if you know how to use it. Plus.. face it even without it people would just go back to armory, inspect, link achievement, all the old stuff.

My view might be a bit skewed being in a decent progression guild but I figure.. people who run pugs can invite whoever they want. They don't make pugs to do "learning" runs, they do it to get in, down bosses and get out. If you want to raid seriously (even as a casual which I am) you'll join a guild that raids.

    No... they won't.

They may have more raw stats but will lack the gems, enchants, set bonuses and procs.

I don't know if you've seen some of the quest rewards and such from even some of the earliest quests in the new content, but the gear scale is ridiculous. I read somewhere that the gear change is similar to the way it was from Vanilla to BC.

Tier 3 was better than all the pre-heroic/raid gear you could find in outland.

As was tier 6 in lich king.
