Who want Linux support for WoW?

NOTE: I DO NOT WANT THIS TO TURN INTO A LINUX VS MAC VS PC DISCUSSION! IF YOU HATE LINUX(Or Mac, or PC), THEN KEEP IT TO YOURSELF! DO NOT REPLY WITH HATE SPEECH OR ANYTHING OF THE SUCH! IF YOU DO NOT WANT LINUX SUPPORT, THEN LEAVE IT AT THAT VIA THE POLL! DO NOT FLOOD THE THREAD WITH SIMPLE "YES" OR "NO" ANSWERS!

I, for one, greatly wish for Linux support. As most of us know, WoW originally had Linux support in the Beta release, but it was withdrawn. Possibly because of so many different Linux distributions, but they all run off the same Kernel so it should be simple. Currently we can get it working via Wine, but I've yet to be able to get WoW to run under Wine with the same performance as I have on Windows, as I top out at around 20 FPS (And that's pretty sad since I have a 9800GT and 3G Ram). WoW is pretty much the only thing preventing me from using Linux over Windows entirely, and surely I'm not the only one that expresses that sentiment?

While I do understand the potential reluctance due to a limited market, Mac OS X has support and it is a market FAR more limited than Windows, and it's userbase has close numbers to Linux. As far as technical limitations go, Linux runs on a Unix-like platform which is similar to Mac OS X. It would potentially even be easier for Blizzard to develop WoW if they added Linux support, as programming is easier on Linux than other platforms. Hell, many film production companies and animation/visual effects companies have migrated to Linux, including Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic.

EDIT: Totally fubar'd the title. Lol.

Wow runs perfectly on linux if you got nvidia/ati graphic card, or any gard that supports opengl basically.

Intel internal graphic card (the ones with shared memory) SUCKS for linux.

And personally I see linux overtaking mac easily within the next 50 years. Why? Because it defeats mac at its own principles and without any of the shitty limitations or costs.

It doesn't run "perfectly", but it does run. As stated, I have a 9800 GT and WoW runs pretty poorly on Linux. I appreciate your support, but your information is a bit..odd. WoW runs poorly on ANY machine, regardless of OS, if it has an internal graphics card. And the next 50 years? Lol. That's quite a timeline. I would be more inclined to say 10 years, or even 5 years for that matter.

I'll be astonished if we aren't operating on quantum-computing-based operating systems in 50 years.

i said 50 years because apple's marketing is going wild at the moment. if you want to take apple out in 10 years, you need to get their marketing department to defect first.

well as for how wow runs, i thought it was perfect anyways. it runs better on linux than on windows xp for sure.

I dont see why not. But linux is the techie type of computer whereas mac is pretty and windows gets the job done no matter how ugly it is

I went from vista (which was to heavy for my pc_) to Linux and absolutely loved it! WoW was running 10 times smoother and i had a lot more fps. (you have to run it in windows mode maxed though). But unfortunally there was no way for me to get steam and steam games to work on Linux so i swapped to windows XP.
Still using XP and i am satisfied with it. It gets the job done nicely, i can run all my games and wow issnt to bad either.
So its not WoW that is keeping me in windows, its that damn steam :P

Kinda funny to see people vote No, however, as there is no reason for you to vote No. They won't remove compatibility with other OS' if they add support for Linux, so it will hurt you in no way, shape, or form, if you are a non-Linux user and they add Linux support.

Of course not. I just happen to be interested and even entertained by the shortcomings of others.

Well, going from a Windows 7 install to Ubuntu with the exact same settings (Dual booting, and copied the folder over, even tried launching from the Windows install), I have lower FPS and higher latency in Ubuntu. This is after switching it to OpenGL of course. I mean it's still playable as it is roughly ~20 FPS, but yeah. If I could get the regular FPS I get in Windows, I would use Linux solely.

as long as it doesnt affect other OS's i dont see why they shouldnt support it.
There upgrading the graphics of the game and the hardware in which runs it, Why can't they upgrade to Linux too?

so yes i'dsupport this. /thumbs up

I don't see why someone would vote no on this poll.

Would most likely be a waste of time and money for blizzard seeing the majority of the 12 million don't use linux. just the minority do

  15. #15
yeah well the majority don't use mac either, so let's not support mac then.

my first post here. Hi to all.

I would definitely like to have a WOW client for LINUX, right now is one of the stuff preventing me from going to linux for good. To bad Blizzard doesn't care for that (maybe Bill Gate$ is paying them money for preventing the linux client release)

Obviously he is, which explains why Macs have support.

Yeah, I'm sure the Chairman of Microsoft has a 10% stock holding in their competition. Obviously the Chairman of Pepsi-cola holds 10% stock in Coca-Cola, the Chairman of WWE holds 10% stock in TNA, and the Chairman of Ford holds 10% stock in Chevrolet. It makes sense, right?
