Noobie SP needs help.

Okey, so I havent really played priest that much, but its something I want to play before cata hits and ofcourse be my main in cata.
I got a few questions that you hopefully can help me with.

I got this "idea" of how a SP works in raid, and that is to apply the three dots. that being VT, DP and SW: P. After that you do a mindblast, and spam mind flay until the first two dots needs to be replenished. And thats the deal, am I right in assuming this?
Secondly, I have little experience with SP but I find them interessting and I want to play one for Cata. But I am a oldschool hardcore pvper and I know quite alot of my current classes and how they work.
Is this a steady dps class which is fun to play?
How did the last patch hit the SP's?
Lastly I wanna hear your thoughts on your class, whats the + and - of its mechanics?

I hope for some serious answers, and if you wanna flame and tell me to go do something else since I suck, then please dont bother.
