Are night elves descended from trolls?

With Cataclysm bringing troll druids, archaeology and Hyjal, I was wondering if there are any hints to the question. It seems like a great opportunity to solve the riddle finally, or at least give more clues towards what happened all those years ago.

Other way around, the trolls believe the elves were descended from them, they came first.

Yes, Nelfs was trolls to begin with - then got hooked on the well of eternity and started mutating into the hidious abominations they are today.

There's a rumor that it was trolls who originally found the Well of Eternity, and they were mutated into the Night Elves from the magic energies.

Night elves are in fact the descendants of trolls, not the other way around, which is one thing that makes wow lore so interesting. I remember reading that near the vanilla release, so it's possible they've changed it since then, but I know it at least was true, because it was one of the things that got me interested in the lore. I'll try to find a source for it.

Are night elves descended from trolls? The night elf race was formed so long ago that no hard evidence has surfaced to answer this question, although it has been asked many times. All that is known for certain is that a tribe of nocturnal humanoids came to live on the shores of the first Well of Eternity, and the Well's cosmic energies changed them into the night elves we know today.

Certainly many trolls do believe that the humanoids who developed into the night elf race were trolls. The theory does have some credibility, for there is at least a superficial physical resemblance between trolls and night elves. Furthermore, the troll race dominated much of ancient Kalimdor several millennia before the night elves came into power.

its theoretical that they are but they only share cosmetic similarity, which could also be because they were likely made by the same titan.
theres no conformation or proof to either point, but since the titans include night elves in there designed in ulduar it casts doubt on the idea that they are decended from trolls,then theres how evolution works.

If you had even a basic understanding of evolution you'd be able to answer that question with ease.
It was the egg : Of a pre-cursor to the chickens, which was more reptilian. the egg is the only correct answer.

As for which came first nelfs or trolls, Nelfs are descended from trolls in theory.

Dwarves.

Trolls existed before the Titans arrived. Therefore Trolls came before Dwarves.

Humans fit into it because they are descendents of the Valkyr. (There is a series of Alliance quests in Howling Fjord about that.) Valkyr are also Titan creations, so Trolls MAY be the first humanoids on Azeroth. There is some argument about the original goblins, Taurahe, and possibly Moonkin and Furlbogs (Elune's creations) existing before the Titans, but that also depends on if we ever learn who/what Elune is.

Humans are descended from the Vrykul, who were themselves direct creations of the Titans.

in fact I take back my last post of Trolls evolved to Nelfs
the share a common ancestor thing this guy just suggested sounds much more likely.
a common ancestor which split into 2 sub-groups (much like Homo Sapiens and Homo Neanderthal were both from same common ancestor) but in this case one sub-group got mutated by Well of eternity, the others evolved to become the masters of the jungles, both with crazy powerful empires.

For the record, official lore doesn't confirm that Night Elves are descendants from Trolls. Trolls say that Night Elves come from them and Night Elves say that they are their own race, created in the image of Elune. Blizzard leaves it up to debate. So it's a speculated origin, not a confirmed one.
