True, but I think even my mom has watched more anime than new person.

Does not really matter. SSY is top-grade series and no reason to leave it for later, no matter how "heavy" it is. It's stuff like TwinTails, Madoka or Evangelion, which are either full of references lost on a newbie or a deconstruction of the genre it belongs to, that should be left till you've got some experience under your belt.

NGE was pretty much the second "mecha" I watched, but that was also after TTGL and I guess that's pretty much the only mecha you really have to know. Madoka was also the first show of that kind that I watched and I don't think I necessarily missed out on anything there. TwinTails tho... how can any of us even consider ourselves worthy of watching such a magnificent piece of art?

NGE is a beautiful deconstruction, and so is Madoka. It's not that it's impossible to enjoy them greatly without a lot of experience with the genres, but you will miss out on some of the intricacies.

On the concept of "beginner anime."

It's stupid. If an anime is good, it's good. Short of anime that rely very heavily on references or previous knowledge (which are hardly any) to properly experience the show, there aren't any anime you should avoid till you're a more "experienced" anime fan. SSY most all. It's a great show that shouldn't be put off. If anything it's a good starting point since it doesn't do a lot of the stupid shit your typical anime does that might scare off someone unfamiliar with the medium.
