Good fantasy not afraid to be brutal, plus the two main girls are absolutely awesome.

According to Okouchi's twitter the Code Geass R2 BD box out a couple months ago included a ghost script of the first episode of R2 he and Taniguchi envisioned (ep 26) before the Sunrise execs ordered to have the whole second season rewritten.

Events apparently in the transcript:
Lelouch winning the shoot off in the cliffhanger at the end of S1
Suzaku battling the geass command
Lelouch crucified

He wasn't suppose to live past the first episode of s2 Lelouch crucified that part was suppose to be in the first episode.
He was meant to die from the very beginning. Okouchi and Taniguchi said so in one the the cast commentaries.

So this rewriting was one of reasons why during S2 it turned from "Tactical combat" to "My mecha is better than your mecha"? That's one aspect of Code Geass I hated. >.>
