    Achievement Points: Why bother?

Why did Blizzard implement Achievement points? Achievements are cool, but why the points? What purpose do they serve?

Seems like it's just another number to add to your epeen : /

    Edit:

They make it sound so stressful...that's why I was curious as to why they do it.
    Edit2:

I'm talking about the points. The POINTS. Not the achievements, the points attached to them.

well i suppose every achievement could give 1 point... so you would count actual achievements not points, but what's the difference...

I'm looking for someone who can try to rationalize the reason behind people who horde these points like they're necessary to exist, and maybe prove me wrong when I said it's just an ego thing.

They were added so people can do menial tasks and feel important, or give them something to do before raids and during off-days of the week. Some are actually fun and take some effort

You will be looking for a while without an answer, because there isnt one.
Closest guess towards your answer and I guess my own personal reason for wanting to gather these points is a sort of step towards completion?
The points are put in the game, i play the game, why not try to obtain as many as possible?

Whoever has the most points is the best (Except on their driver's license). Life revolves around this.

One explanation can be that some achievements are more "valuable" or harder than others, like metas. Glory of the Icecrown Raider (25 player) as an example, gets you 25 points, to show that it's more special, more "valuable" and/or harder to get than the requirements for the meta are.

Yah, actually at blizzcon 2010 the officially stated that the points are basically useless, that they put them in the game as a "high score" thing and nothing more.. They don't want the points to be used to better your character because then players would feel that the achievements were necessary and some people don't want to farm achievements (i know cynical brit/totalbiscuit/totalhailbut Hates them... I love them tho XP )
