PC freezes between 30 seconds, 5 minutes, and just infinite, on system startup

Okay, so here is my issue, and i will notice later on what i have tried so far. Would really love it if any professionals might share their insights on the particular issue.
    The problem:
Since some months my computer has some freezing up issues. What happens is, when i click the button to start my computer, i have always had the big white Acer load screen, for +/- 3-5 seconds. Then a beep follows, after the beep my computer starts up (first a black screen with white text saying it loaded/checked stuff, then windows starting up). Now since this issue started, 90% of the time, these 3-5 seconds, have become 1-5 minutes, and sometimes, it doesn't leave the white screen at all, no matter how long i wait, and i have to manually turn off the computer by holding the button for 3 seconds. (yes i know that is bad for a computer.) Apart from that, when i get past the white screen, and when my windows (vista) starts, the bar with the 3 blibs moving from left to right, indicating windows is loading, 100 % of the time also freezes up for 30 seconds (so also if the white screen doesn't do it's thing). Always gets out of that tho, but it just is not right.
Apart from booting freeze-ups, i also rarely have random freeze-ups when doing random stuff (usually when just on youtube, but also on other random ocasions (i am 90% sure i miss-spelled that word)). A last thing to mention, sometimes the white starting screen when booting, just takes the normal 3 seconds it SHOULD be (that 10% chance to add to the 90 mentioned earlier), but the chance for the freeze up later on seems to be bigger. Or i'm just paranoid.

My system specs, a less than 2 year old desktop: Acer Aspire M3641 - 92.DER7G.TCP

I can provide more information if needed.
One more thing to mention: ever since the above mentioned problem started, my computer also doesn't recognize the fact that i have a DVD/RW (or a variation of that name) drive present, although it does open, and is physically connected to the motherboard.
Problems keep happening even if i start up with everything except power supply disconnected from the desktop. (i can tell that from the timing of the beep)

New issue showing up today: WoW freezing up my computer when i click the button on the main screen to log in / press enter.

---UPDATE: Using repair tool on wow won't help, and i already defragmented that hard drive, so i will be reinstalling it.---
What I tried to solve this issue, but didn't work:
System Recovery, to any date before i got this issue. Result: same problems.
Driver Update via Windows list with hardware, Windows checked for new drivers online, found some (and installed ofcourse), but no changes at all to my problem.
Safe mode startup: can't solve white screen issue, because i can only activate it when i am far past that, and doesn't solve any other stuff.
Vacuuming some dust, although there was barely any there.
Disconnecting all hardware (mouse/monitor/keyboard, and all things like that), same problems.
Scanned for viruses and spyware and malware, some have been found and solved, but still same problems.

Currently defragmenting my hard drives, although that is already being done every month according to my windows, but this time i just do it manually to be sure.

Last resort if defragmenting and listening to hopefully any feedback from the forums does not work: formatting my computer (never done that before, and got to make sure i still have a windows to use after it, as i do not have a disk for it (has already been pre-packaged on the hard drive when the desktop got shipped to me, together with the other software), only a activation code (or how that code is called) for the current windows, which i guess i could use if i could just fill it in somewhere:P.

As you see i don't know anything about formatting my computer, so any feedback on that would be greatly appreciated as well, if it turns out to be needed.

A big THANKS to all of you reading this, and if you have any suggestion/idea/feedback to help me out, would be AWESOME.

You might have a failing HDD. -- There are a couple programs you can use to find out.

    UBCD for Windows
    Total Commander

Are two good tools for virtual windows environment that allow you to run HDD Diagnostics. It requires you to follow some directions and setup, but not too hard.

I had a Dell that used to this, random freeze ups, taking forever to load OS and what not. I took the computer apart and cleaned every part of dust, making sure all of the fans were working and even took the heat sink off. Guess what? There was barely even any heat sink compound between the CPU and the heat sink. So I went to Best Buy and bought a $40 heat sink (much bigger) and some compound; installed it and haven't had any problems since and runs even better than when I bought it. Hope this helps some!

UBCD's site is saying it is only for Xp and older, so afraid it won't work for vista. I think I will give Total Commander a try.

The thing that is really agitating me at the moment is the fact that WoW does not work since yesterday, I only downloaded two programs, malwarebytes (anti-malware) and spybot S&D (anti-spyware), and even after re-installing WoW, and restoring Windows to 2 days ago, when it still worked (and before i installed those 2 programs), it does the same... Might be at the point to miss the entire shattering :'|

---UPDATE: Total Commander is nothing more than a tool to view my documents when windows is already started, while my problems are not browsing my documents, but getting my computer started.

Also I can tell about the WoW problem: on the starting screen, by entering in the top box "(anything)@(anything).(anything)" (a random email adress), in the lower box ANYTHING, and just clicking the Login button, even without having an internet connection, will crash my computer (sound loop, mouse not responding, Alt-Ctrl-Del not responding, nor does any other keyboard combo).

For expert info i will ad the rest of my DXDiag in here, sorry for the wall of text in advance. Some parts might be in dutch, can translate certain parts on request.

sounds like a hard disk error as vicarious ink mentioned.

See if you can access the event viewer (Click the Start button, In the Search box, type Event Viewer, and then, in the list of results, double-click Event Viewer.) check under costum views if you see disk errors.
From experience with my work the last 5 years...its means RIP to your harddisk.

    Perhaps a good trick:
    1. make a backup copy of your current installation folder of WoW (roughly 20gb or more at the moment) to an external hard drive or another pc if you have one.
    2. install windows etc
    3. copy the WoW folder where you want to have it
    4. open the launcher and play like nothing happened (works like a charm for me )

Okay, so i got a question about that too, windows was prepackaged on my hard drive, so i don't have a disk.
It is totally legal however, and i got a product code. Do you have any idea if something is downloadable where you just have to enter that product code afterwards?

You can request a CD from the computers manufacturer. Also, another thing I was thinking about like Martyisokay had said; I was thinking about if your CPU is being over-heated. If you could, is there a way for you to run SpeedFan or something like that to get your temp read outs of the CPU?

Basically, I want you to run a stress test on your computer and see if/when is crashes. Here are the 2 programs I would suggest using:

    SpeedFan - http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
    Prime95 - http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

SpeedFan will show you the temps currently if your system allows for such and Prime95 is a battery test that takes your CPU and RAM and puts tons of stress on them. It's used to see if there is any issues with RAM or CPU from stress/heat/dataloss. If you do not want to do this, I can understand, let me know and I will see if I can help you further.

okay, back at my computer once again, speedfan data right here:
when doing nothing except for being on this page:
    Temp1:39
    Temp2:41
    Temp3:39
    Core1:41
    Core2:41
    Core3:43
    Core4:43

I'll edit in the rest of the data to prevent losing it if i crash during test

I would suggest Core Temp and OCCT instead. Core Temp is more accurate and handles more hardware (both points are arguable). OCCT's stress test makes Prime95 look like a lazy afternoon. I've had systems not error in 8-12 hour periods of Prime95 that throw errors within 30 minutes of OCCT running. It also tends to hit a higher max temperature, which is good for cooling testing.

Woot, i crashed during the very first test, because i tried to drag the speedfan window, that was too much for it i guess XD. And with Prime95 is heavy enough for my system, it gave 3 fire signs out of the 7 temperatures. The measurements i did:
Log2, just after booting without any other software except for speedfan:
    Temp1:43
    Temp2:42
    Temp3:41
    Core1:44
    Core2:44
    Core3:48
    Core4:48

During the prime 95 test without touching anything:
    Temp1:50 (flame icon)
    Temp2:44
    Temp3:42
    Core1:48
    Core2:48
    Core3:51 (flame icon)
    Core4:51 (flame icon)

This much flame icons doesn't seem too good to me:P

Anyone able to make something up from this data?

The first thing is that SpeedFan likes to panic way too early. 51*C is definitely not too hot for your CPU. Intel lists the Q8200 with a maximum tCase of 71.4*C, which would equate to roughly 82*C core temperature, which is what SpeedFan and Core Temp display.

How long did you let Prime95 run? Your CPU won't hit max temperature for at least 15 minutes. Also, when you crashed, did you get an error message of any kind? Did it just crap out on certain cores or did you have an actual system crash?

Again, I'd suggest OCCT instead of Prime95.

If you were a client of mine, the first thing I would do is check the mobo for blown capacitors. Leaky, bloated, or burnt...
    I would then run memtest.
I would then download HDTune and check the health tab for red/yellow alerts as well as run a full sector scan. (Any red in the upper half = time for a new drive. 1-2 red in the bottom half is okay, but I would still suggest getting a new drive.)
While this is going on make sure there are not conflicts in the device manager.

This is all I can suggest for you to check hardware. These are the easiest scans to do.

P.S. I use CPUID: Hardware Monitor to watch temps.

Okay, i let OCCT run for a full hour (the standard scan), and it still had maximum temperatures of around 50, and when i came back to my pc it didn't crash or anything, could post the images i got as result, with some graphs, i do not know what you conclude from the results through that.
Also, i do not get any error message, everything just stops responding, and any music/sound currently playing will loop the last .1 second. Full system crash, only able to get out by holding the on/off button for 3 seconds.

And Dion, what i also should notice now is that i for some reason can't use my CD/DVD-rom player because Windows does not find it for some reason, although it does open and close, and is connected to the mobo. Also when i tried to use DAEMON lite or Imdisk to open Memtest 86 iso, the programs just wouldn't open, while they did work some time ago. Strange. I was able to unpack it with a zipping program tho, but not entirely sure how to get it to work, because i get 2 folders and 2 more zip packages with all kinds of files with an extension of one letter XD. And it keeps saying Linux in some places, but i downloaded windows version.

Anyone able to help this apparantly worthless guy XD. Gonna do the steps everything starting from HDTune from Dion's post, hope it will work. I'll keep you up to date.

memtest has to be booted from the cd so emulators and unzippers wont work.
Try plugging your cd tray into a different port, exchanging the sata cable or exchanging the cd bay.

edit: there might be a way to boot from the usb for it, but it is such a small program I have never wanted to waste a usb stick to try.

So i tried plugging it into a different port, but it won't really make any difference, maybe after restarting it will show up again, but i'll first try and get that hd tune to work because the health section is completely without any records in it. (i am using the 15 day free trail of the pro version)

just doing some of the tests from that program, results:

    Butterfly seek 69 IOPS 14.589 ms 0.033 MB/s
    Random seek / size 64 KB 76 IOPS 13.111 ms 1.173 MB/s
    Random seek / size 8 MB 16 IOPS 61.603 ms 65.823 MB/s
    Sequential outer 1679 IOPS 0.596 ms 104.952 MB/s
    Sequential middle 1482 IOPS 0.675 ms 92.624 MB/s
    Sequential inner 875 IOPS 1.143 ms 54.678 MB/s

where do i find that full sector scan? i did do windows hard drive check which took half an hour and said it found no problems, and HD Tune has an error scan, and after an hour it scanned half of my HDD and found no errors yet, should i let it scan everything?

Nothing in the health section is semi common for old drives. Has nothing to do with it being a trial version.
Report back when the error check finishes.

you replied while i was just asking for what it was, awesome timing:P letting it finish that check right away, zero issues so far tho.

AHA, i enabled speed scan, and it did it in a minute, and found zero problems. Kinda too fast to believe, so i will commence, "slow" scan once more!
