Blizzard is a developer and a publisher in its own right and commands a huge MMO market share as well as having a huge market share in RTS .. Vivendi saw an opportunity to make some cash and made an offer to Blizzard, Blizzard accepted the offer and became a subsidiary of Vivendi (just like Activision is).

Neither Activision or Blizzard have anything to do with each other, other than having the same parent company and perhaps Blizzard using the immense publishing capabilities of Actvision. Each company has it's own CEO as well.

The reason Vivendi change their name to Actvision Blizzard was so they had a recognizable market name that people knew and trusted.

Please Just STOP with the Activision owns Blizzard crap .. it's simply not true
This. Except one correction. Vivendi's game division was called Vivendi Games which Blizzard Entertainment was a part of for many years. (To the person who doesn't understand this here - Yes, Vivendi games WAS and IS still the parent company of Blizzard) When they merged with Activision they changed the VG namesake to Activision Blizzard to become one big name that could compete with others like EA.

Nope. As stated above - Vivendi is the parent company of Blizzard and now Activision. They didn't buy one another - they merged - huge difference. Activision does not get a cut out of Blizzards sales. It's all about paper and looking good on paper. What looks better - company A worth 2 million and company B worth 3 or company C worth 5 million?\

Very few companies are 100% independent on paper these days. Just about every one of them has a parent somewhere.

Ya Amazon receives way, way more traffic in a day then Blizzard's website probably does in a month, but they aren't comparable companies. Amazon completely relies on their website being up at all times. Without it, the company simply can not function. Blizzard doesn't need their website to be continuously running. The two companies don't even offer similar services.

Maybe their servers being constantly up and down has something to do with them possibly just doing a massive overhaul of their entire website system? Gee wouldn't that be a shocker. I'm no programmer, but I imagine there is going to be a lot of work done when you do such a massive overhaul. Hell they finally just got the armory to work in the US last week.

    Stop spreading crap miss-information.

ACTIVISION does not have any say in the running of Blizzard NOR do they get any of the revenue.
the shots are called by 11 board members, 5 who were with blizzard before activision bought out blizzard, 1 who is a blizzard rep assigned by activision, 5 from activision.

there have been at least 3 team leaders quit blizzard in the past 2 years who were with blizz since the start, simply because they decided they did not think the original idea for wow was still something they could make happen under the current conditions.

you also may want to google what activision has done with its other acquisitions. infinity ward developed call of duty but when their ideas clashed with what blizzard wanted, the bosses at infinity ward were fired and escorted out by armed security with a warning that any other disagreements would be dealt with in the same way.

the second wow doesn't shatter sales records, they'll gut it. things are fine now, but will end abruptly on day, it won't fade away like EQ has

Thanks, it gets a bit obfuscated sometime trying to figure out who owns what and who is the parent of whom.

What do you think about it ? Did they deserve so much money for game (about 100$) to start play and then 13 eur subscription for this arrogant messages and announcment? Im rellay angry ...
Not being able to log on for an hour before a massive game launches a new expansion? Thats not THAT long. 12 midnight... set it up, go to sleep or take a nap and wake up in a few hours if your itchin to play. If you had a couple thousand or more people accessing a server all at once, chances are there will probably have problems. When wow first came out or during BC; waiting in Que for an hour....seriously. Geezus man.

Also, with the amount of traffic that Blizzard had and does have, I'm surprised they have been so great with the servers.
Before making a new post, make sure to put in some EMO music, start watching "Twilight", grab a razor and go to town.

Like someone said: Today is not a normal maintenance day for the EU (it's usually Wednesday). Maybe i missed an announcement where they said the website would be unavailable today. And to be fair, since the cataclysm release, the EU wow website has been offline/online/offline, slow and outdated (armory) at times.

And who cares what company gets the money, i'm sure they can make sure they all get their share. Fact is that the paid service is provided by Blizzard and it's their responsibility to make the service available.

Activision DIDNT acquire Blizzard .. they are separate entities.

Dear Sir or Madam: I believe you are confusing planned intentional maintenance with withstanding a web attack. This is unfortunately an error in your understanding of the real world in addition to your application of logic in a real world setting.

High traffic websites require maintenance to keep them running smooth and bug free. They also allow the owner of said websites to add and/or improve upon features. You also made the unfortunate mistake of comparing a company that is about quantity to a company that is about quality.

The short version: every website and computer needs maintenance. Blizzard took their servers down on purpose to perform said maintenance.

PS. Amazon is about quantity. Blizzard is not. Companies that conduct business on mass generally have backup servers to switch to during maintenance. Blizzard is a small, high quality business. Amazon is a large, lower quality one.
