Did I miss the memo about avatars?

Every thread I have checked today has the link "randomuser's Avatar" in place of an actual avatar. Did I miss a memo somewhere, or have I inadvertantly changed my settings to not display avatars? I know they are pretty silly and ultimately inconsequential, but it does help me to identify users somewhat. Besides...how are people supposed to know I'm just "a simple hyper-chicken from a backwoods star system" if they can't see my avatar??? *runs to room, slams door, sobs quietly in the closet*

EDIT: Aaaaaand....after a few minutes the avatars magically reappear! and there was much rejoicing!

Yay! It might have just been a problem with the network connection -- i think that's the alt text if it can't display the images.
