Kid smacked for not turning off his cell phone.

Saw this this morning and thought it was interesting/kinda funny.

(CNN) -- A 68-year-old Idaho man has been charged with misdemeanor battery after police say he struck a teen who would not turn off his iPhone while the plane they were in was taxiing for takeoff.

The incident took place Tuesday evening on a Southwest Airlines flight from Las Vegas to Boise, Idaho, said Lt. Kent Lipple of the Boise police.

The man, Russell Miller, was arrested after the plane landed, Lipple said.

Miller told police that the 15-year-old boy refused to turn off his phone after directions from the flight crew. The suspect "felt he was protecting the entire plane and its occupants," Lipple said.

According to the police report, Miller said he smacked the boy with the back of his hand to get his attention. Officer, however, said the incident left a mark on the boy's shoulder. ~source: http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/12/29/...pt=P1&iref=NS1
So what do you think? Was the man justified? Was the kid being a little snot and got what he deserved?

Considering having an iphone turned on with "flight mode" enabled is of no threat to the radio system in a plane, that man was wrong and deserved this.

He totally got what he deserved.

Considering having an iphone turned on with "flight mode" enabled, that man is a fucktard and deserved this.
I know many people that don't even know there is a "flight mode" on their iphone !

although the man was not in any right to do what he did, the kid was being a brat, and just an immature twat. Just ban him from using any airplanes for a year or 10. That should teach it.

The kid got what he deserved. If the crew asks you to turn it off, you just do as they say, since there's probably a fairly good reason why they tell you to.

However, "left a mark" makes it sound like the old man went a tad rough on the kid.

Thanks to Elyaan for the great sig!

Think the old guy is a douche.

iPhones have a flight mode, like most mobile (cell) phones do now. That means it doesn't send or receive data, it just becomes a glorified games machine.

plus the whole bullshit of having to turn off mobile phones for flight safety is, well, bullshit. Many times me and friends/co-workers flying on planes have left our mobiles on.

Was the man justified for beating the kid? What do you live in the middle age? If he refuses to turn off the phone you confiscate it for the flight. If he responds in violence then there you have it.

except you're wrong. Flight attendants, nor anyone else except the user of the phone knows if the phone is in airplane mode. Thus it was a viable risk.

    Fail less please

    @Kuran

you must feel so epic now, having left your cellphones on. OMG we are all so jealous of you /headdesk

Not all of the rules make sense, but you must abide by them. The end.

It's a nanny state this day and age, and they wonder why the kids of today are so disrespectful to everyone. I personally give my kids 3 warnings for back answering or being naughty, after the 3rd they get a slap. I was brought up to respect people, say please and thank you, open doors for people, etc. My 7 year old has only been slapped once, and not had to again, He actually is very respectful to everyone, he is the perfect boy.. My 18 year old has the same treatment, and while his friends are out drinking, smoking and getting into trouble, he's studying to be a police officer, he goes out to the pub and has a drink and a laugh with his friends, but he knows when to stop.

I giggled so hard! While he didn't need to smack him so hard, and it's probably wrong of him to lay a hand on someone's child I personally feel like all the kids holding their cellphones like idols need to be back handed as well.

You know, just the other day I saw a fourth grader with a cell phone. Her mother's excuse was for emergency purposes. *Sigh*

Call me bias but I think cell phones are the worst invention.... ever. I have one, but out of the 1,000 minutes I share with my husband we use.. 250? lol We actually play a little game on the way back from the farthest mall from us; we count how many drivers are on their cell phones on the high way and how many of them can barely stay in their lanes. :x

depends on how I see them. This was another spoiled Iphone brat (like 90% of the other Iphone users), so I call them it. Why should I dignify such baddies witha gender?

It's been proven that cell phones do not disrupt the planes systems. My source would be Mythbusters. However, the kid should have still listened to the crew when they told everyone to turn their phones off. Hell, if I thought phones could cause a plane to crash and that this kid was going to risk my life, I would do more then just slap him... I would take his phone and smash it on the ground.

Right, sorry I should have added that part myself too. I know kids can be little asses now a days. Still the old guy got what he deserved.

Oh don't get me wrong, if someone touched my kid I'd be furious. I would've made sure my kid turned off the phone though, so it wouldn't have happened in the first place.

    Yes mother.

But after working for a airline maintenance firm, I can honestly say that interference from mobile phones on aircraft's is practically non existent. No network provider can actually provide signal over that distance/height, its all to do with pleasing the other passengers and generally keeping a peaceful atmosphere on the flight.

Darn whippersnappers and their dag-gone technological bologna.
    But yeah, stupid man.
There have been many times when I wanted to smack someone else's kid, but that's something you just don't do.
Unless he hit the old man first, then it's open season on his insolent ass.
But he didn't, so the old man was in the wrong.

    This.

I remember once upon a time that when kids were out and about, whatever adult was around was aloud to take care of any issues regardless of who the kid belonged to. If my kids misbehaved and the neighbor/lifeguard/random passerby whipped their arse, then they got what they deserved. While there is a line between beating and punishment, that line was never crossed when I was a kid. All adults watched out for all children, and all children were taught to be respectful of people and property.

I was only spanked once by another adult that I lipped off to when I was a child. Haven't done it again.
I was spanked once in school (please bring back corporal punishment) for inappropriate language to another student. Haven't done it again.

    Respect is lacking these days.
