Well when playing WoW ( actually that is already shortened) I shorten all of the basic gamer words like "lol", "omg", "ffs" and then instance names and so on.

Go to Gay = GtG
Laugh = lol
Achievement = Achi
Can't be adhd= = Cba
Oh my god = omg
Etc.
RTFM is by far my most used.
We are WARRIORS man! If we can't make it bleed, we will sure as hell dent the f%^ck out of it!
I dont use any shortenings except for achi and gratz, those are the only ones I use.
''Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack'' -Sun Tzu
Abbreviations and Acronyms are not the same thing and shortening a word.
In my opinion:
Saying lol or brb is acceptable as an accronym. Saying "ur" instead of "your" is just lazy and makes you look ignorant.
I also really hate when people call Heroics, hc's. It just doesn't make sense.
I try not to abbreviate too many phrases. The only ones I can think of are lol, brb and afk. I only use ty when I'm competitively playing League of Legends and can't spend too much time typing. I need to be really focused on everybody's locations.
Actually, I think I abbreviate most dungeon names as well but only in text, I don't actually spell out any of them verbally. AV is the only battleground I abbreviate.
DIAGF = Die in a grease fire :P Favorite word for noobs
Since you seem to like nitpicking, BRB isn't an acronym, it is an initialism.
As for calling Heroics HC's: I herd u liek DeoxyriboNucleic Acid, united states Special Operations COMmand, KaNINE, OKay, AlasKa, ElektroKardioGramm, FooLy CooLy, FallOut 3, DataBase, etc.
My favorite is easily gl;hf.
Get Lost; HorseFucker.

Along with alot of more that I just cba to type! Such as class-specific, spells, bosses, instances etc etc etc...
I very rarely shorten words... I don't want to kill the english language :P
Amazing sig, done by mighty Lokann
Usually I use: brb, afk, grats, omg, lol, rofl, btw, cya, gtg, hf and gl.
But I hate it when people use y as yes and u as you or ur as your.
I'm sorry.
You seem to be missing the point. The complaint isn't shortening "heroic" to "hc", the complaint is with adding in a random apostrophe for no reason. People don't understand what apostrophes are used for. Changing "Heroics" to "HC's" means you're either saying something belongs to the heroic (the heroic's handbag? - doesn't make sense) or you're saying the heroic IS something (this heroic's hard, please nerf it!). Saying "LFM random hc's" doesn't make sense.
People need to learn how and when to use apostrophes and not just randomly throw them into sentences when they see fit.
