[Music] General opinion on Greatest Hits and Best Of compilations.

I think a greatest hits album is a good way to introduce someone to a band or to complete a collection. There have been some so/so collections and some decent ones.

What is your favorite and least favorite?

    Humm,

I'm with you to a degree, it's a great way to be introduced to a band. But a lot of artists put a ton of effort into crafting a perfect album, with a lot of the tracks meaning something together or being connected otherwise, that I can find it irritating sometimes. For a lot of bands, also, there's no such thing as an 'album track' or 'singles' (Radiohead spring to mind immediately as a band who, at least later on, crafted albums to be listened to rather than songs).

I own a few though (gah! my own hypocrisy tastes delicious). I've got Echoes, the Pink Floyd compilation, as it's huge and for me is plenty 'deep' enough. Also got the Oasis one but that's because I'm not a huge fan and I just wanted a way of listening to "Live Forever" without having to stomach their whole albums...
