    Charter 18Mbps

I'm in the process of picking up an internet service from Charter, and I'm wondering if 18Mbps is a good for MMORPGs like WOW and DCUO.

o.O Looking for a compatible modem too.

Yeah, that's good. Anywhere around 20mbps = more than enough. Oh and shouldn't they also include a free modem with you too or something?

I'm running 2 mpbs (lol!) and wow/any other MMO runs flawlessly (max 120 ish ms unless I start downloading) though games like counterstrike and other FPS games online are a nuisance with this kinda speed...

oh lawd, give me march so I can get 90 mbps..

I run mine fine on 16 mbps, and that's connecting to an American server.

    Is it DOCSIS2(Cable?)

If so, Motorola SB5101 can't be beat for older DOCSIS2.

most modems nowadays are DOCSIS2, DOCSIS3 being for connections at 25+

WoW doesn't necessarily use a lot of bandwidth for gametime. The only benefit for getting a higher bandwidth connection would be for faster patch/game downloads.

    Thank you everyone.
Drakoes, Charter has a modem for lease for an extra 5 dollars a month.
I'm not sure Asera; I'll have to research their site or give their service guys a call.

Would a modem with DOCSIS work if the ISP isn't using that format?

The only time you'll ever care about your bandwidth is when you are loading up in Org or Stormwind. That is the only time that your connection will bottleneck you.

You could always go check on the company's website or check google.

Bottlenecks in high population areas are primarily related to bottlenecks on your PC, not necessarily from an internet connection

    you mean like this?

Charter is a cable company. So yes, they use DOCSIS. All you have to do is see if they use DOCSIS3 in your area, and if so it would be better for you and the network to grab a DOCSIS3 capable modem. The 6120 for example. It'll cost you ~$100 but it's usually better than what they'd lease you, unless they lease you one of those. Either way you'd be saving money after about 2 years. But with a leased modem, any issue with the modem and they just swap it for you.

512k dsl would be enough to play WoW on, possibly even less. The data transfer rates really are very low...

3Mbps is all you'll probably need for most modern MMOs since 99% of the info is installed on your computer locally. Anything more will just allow you to do other things while the game is running, for instance torrenting in the background.

Please explain when else the sub-1Mbps connection that WoW requires would cause a bottleneck on any broadband connection.

Old ISDN is enough bandwidth for WoW even.

Response times and packet loss is what one should be concerned about.
