Sites don't really help. They're usually amateurish and don't give proper details. Rosetta stone is a decent program, especially with the newer version, however you should learn the basics from someone at the very least. I had lessons in the past, so I know the pronunciations, the Hiragana / Katakana, and other such things (best to learn it from an actual Japanese person, it helps an ass ton). Afterwards, Rosetta can set you in a pretty good direction if you have no classes. I don't know about your school's Japanese course. Also, Rosetta stone is expensive... so I kinda... yeah.
