3rd party defragmenter program as opposed to integrated MS defrag program

I've seen a few cases of people suggesting to download a defrag program for.. well, defragging your drives when needed. Why download a 3rd party program instead of using the 1st party Microsoft program? Just curious.

some of the 3rd party defraggers are / were considered to be more thorough than the windows native one.

I'm not sure if that's the case any longer.

The built in defragmentation program is more than enough for most. Some people get 3rd party programs for customizability or "speed" (honestly the slower the defragmenter, the better off you're probably are).

Found downloading the Diskeeper trail and letting it auto-defrag as I go for a month will fix any hard drive no matter how fragged.

Tried using the built-in one on this but left huge patches of red, all was totally fixed at the end of the trial and 5k+ fragments prevented.

Win Vista and Win7 have auto-defragmentation.
My full 1TB HDD is at 0% fragmentation, aswell as the Raid0 1Tb and another full 150Gb HDD.
Unless you are using WinXP I'd say just let the native one do it's job...

I'm not sure about current situation but in win98' times (and early) defragmenter from Norton Utilities was waaaaaay better than original micro$oft product.

I agree, I upgraded to the paid version after it defragged so thoroughly and very fast as well. I find the background defrag very smooth and unintrusive.

IO bit's Smart Defrag is incredible. I highly suggest that.
