    AMD or Intel for gaming

    Hi Guys,
Am trying to get a new laptop with a budget in mind, so wondering if a few who own AMD can tell me a lil bit about the listed below comparision between AMD and intel.
AMD Phenom(TM) II Triple-Core Mobile Processor N870 and INtel i5
    or (AMD Phenom(TM) II Quad-Core Mobile Processor P960 (1.8GHz, 2MB L2 Cache) ? - Should I even go this extreme?)

    Appreciate your feedback.

    TY

(PS: I tried looking for comparision but I will be using it mostly for general computing and of course WoW, so seeking feedback from WoW prespective, I do raiding and PvP too)

    Sadly, Intel.

I'd look for a laptop with an overcomable price featuring i5-4x0M.
Preferably with a Radeon mobility 5870 gpu, but I guess an nvidia 460M or a 285 in worst cases would suffice.

if your looking for a laptop I would go with a macbook pro (expensive end) or a toshiba/dell/sony with intel not amd. Amd processors tend to run really hot and that can be bad for a laptop. Stay away from hp/compaq ect... personally ive had bad luck with hps but read reviews on websites.

Don't wanne start a flame war or something.

But if you want a gaming laptop get one from Acer/Asus those still have some nice price/performance. You get a new g73 with i7 2630qm gtx 460M 1,5 hard drive 8gb ram blu ray drive for 1,9k euro'S a macbook pro with that setup doesnt exsist (atleast i couldnt find on there site if they alrdy use the new CPU's) else its about 50% expensiver .

OT: Always a Intel over a AMD. Look that you get one off the new cpu's (i5 2XXX) those have way better performance then the old cores.

What exactly is your budget? Are you located in the US?

Intel is better for gaming in both desktop and laptop platforms.

    -1 for acer.

Bought an Acer Extensa with a mobility Radeon HD 3650 card about two years ago. It started out decent, but things went downhill pretty fast, with the cheap plastic breaking and screen going blank on cold boot. Eventually it just simply always had a blank screen. Finally sent in it for repair. It took them THREE MONTHS. They replaced the screen but after one hour of usage the blank screen (more commonly known as the "acer white screen of death") was back.

I stomped on it and threw it out the window (in my mind).

Went with a Sony Vaio and been loving it the past year. Because the screen is never going blank and it doesn't break when I touch it!

Acer is a cheap brand, you get what you pay for. Sony costs a lot more because of their looks and customer service.

Except for the high pitch sound from the fan on some models (including mine )

If your playing games like WoW you'll be fine but don't expect to play games on High Setting's. If you want a real Gaming Laptop expect to break the bank a little bit. And ya go with Asus or Sony or if your desperate Dell. But my first pick would be Asus.

Outside of the US, Acer is one of the biggest companies for laptops and monitors and usually have some of the best quality products. I've had nothing but Acer laptops and monitors and have had absolutely no issues with them, and their customer service has been pretty damn good whenever I needed it, they're fantastic -- it's a shame they never took off in the US.

However that performance difference is so small you would never know their was a difference without looking at a benchmarking graph

That being said considering it is for a laptop I would still go with Intel as they generally consume less power and generate less heat.

Toshiba makes the best laptops imo, gaming or otherwise. Samsung actually is a close 2nd in my experience as well. The Qosmio laptops are the best you can get for the price.

and as far as what the OP wants, here is the breakdown:

Get an intel processor, an i5 (not an i3, and an i7 is overkill for what your needs are) with the highest clock rate you can, while staying in your budget range
any laptop with a DEDICATED graphics card with at least a gig of memory should run wow just fine. Look online for a benchmark of dedicated mobile video cards and choose the best you can that will stay in your budget range. Remember that wow runs better on nvidia cards because nvidia had an old partnership with them when WoW first started, but overall the radeon cards are generally more powerful than their nvidia cards in other games (as far as notebooks are concerned... I dont want to start a war)
also, the screen resolution and quality are also very important, and try to get a card with at least a 7200 rpm hard drive, if not a SSD if you can afford it

    -3 for Acer
I had one, the fan broke after 6 months.

I've had no issues at all with my one Acer-laptop.
The only issues I've had with it are 100% user inflicted (back when my ex used the power-cord sticking out of the computer as a steppingstone while climbing up to the bed, for instance, and breaking of the keyboard through overuse).
It played wow darn well for its' speccs during the beginning of TBC (C2D @ 2.0, Geforce 9600M). Sadly, I didn't do much research pre-buying it, and got one with 4GB ram and a .32 win-vista. :/
The one gripe I had with it, was that it claimed to handle 1080p (which it never did, at least on youtube), with satisfactory results.

But a 3year-old laptop with a bluray and whatnot, I shan't complain. The acer, otherwise and with its feature was the best laptop I've had - for its time.

However, speccs are more important than brand, but brand isn't irrelevant.

if only it wasnt the total opposite with their desktop chips. My i7 runs ALOT hotter than my old phenom II quad core processor.

AMD 6 core is faster and cost less then the i5 and is better with ati hd cards if your doing nividia go with intel
but make sure you get losts of cooling
