How does it improve game performance?
Higher benchmark scores, then.
Tweaktown ran an updated benchmark testing SP1.
Results weren't that impressive. Although there is no reason not to install it.

Via the installation of updates that applies to the Windows 7 'Graphics Platform' - that is, DirectX. Like most non-security updates, they're not available on Windows Update and must be downloaded manually via the Microsoft Download Center page, for example.

Many of these updates however are required for IE9 to work, and if you have at some point tried it at your computer - they may already have been installed.

I recently installed SP1 on my gaming machine. Have seen no noticeable difference in gaming performance, but it certainly hasn't degraded it at all. Windows itself seems a little quicker overall, however, which is nice.
