    I think I've got a crappy job.

    Hello MMO-champion people!

Since I'm dirt poor (I buy food, clothes and drinks worth less than 10 euros a week while living in a very expensive country), I decided I needed a job.
    So... eh... here's my story:

Not too long ago, I applied for a job (I do the dishes) and guess what? I got it! I was very happy, until I actually had to go working.

My first day, AKA 'test day':

I was scheduled from 12:00 'til 18:00 on a Saturday. I didn't really expected to have to do too much work, but I was DEAD wrong. At one point I felt I just had to run away, since the sight of all those dirty plates just struck fear into my heart. I didn't. At around 16:00, the second guy showed up to help me a bit. Things went faster, but not very much.
At the end of the day, I reviewed what had happened: I was extremely stressed, had to go to the toilet (wasn't allowed a break) and was very hungry and thirsty (wasn't allowed to eat or drink).

    Second day, AKA 'newb day':

I was scheduled from 18:00 'til closing time (when the last customers leave and everything else is clean). This time I knew it was going to be a lot of work and I was totally right. Again, I worked for 6.5 hours - no break, no food, no drinks besides hot water. I had to clean stuff I imagine never to have been cleaned before without gloves or any other form of protection. I got yelled at by the guy who makes the sauces for being lazy (he didn't make them, he was just doing... nothing). At about 21:00 I really had to take a piss, but wasn't allowed to. I finally was able to take a piss at 01:30 when I was back home.
Another thing: I had to clean stuff with chemicals - on the box/bottle it said: don't let X come in contact with your skin, clothes, etc, etc.. - again without gloves or any other form of safety.
My hands are still red, more than half a week later since I have to work with boiling hot water all the time.
All this wasn't all that bad. I also had to clean the toilet and what I saw there really almost made my stomach turn! On the toilet, in a Grand Café, I saw a Buddha statue. I myself am Buddhist and I really can't imagine how anybody could possibly think a statue of a very important person in a religion belongs in such a place! Why not? First of all: Buddhists never sit with their feet in the direction of the Buddha, second: it's a toilet - toilets are awful places for any religion. And last but certainly not least: it's a Grand Café, meaning they serve alcohol. The Buddha was totally against alcohol and other forms of intoxicants, yet someone still decided to forget all reason and buy a statue of him!

To show just how cruel the people there are. My co-worker had a massive nose-bleed. He was bleeding all over himself, on me and on the dishes, yet he still wasn't allowed to take a break. "Just wash it off again and do it right this time" was what they told him. He later told me that he'd never had a nose-bleed there before, so this was his first time - he seemed to be pretty concerned about it.

    So... eh...

    How crappy is YOUR job?

Every single day i wake up and audit for 8 hours straight >.<

Now this is certantly nothing compared to what you have to live with... Is it a "real" job? (Meaning u pay taxes of your salary?) or are u paid "under the table"?.

If it's the case that it is a real job, then, if you live inside of Europe, this is illegal... for every 4th hour you work, you are eligible for 15 mins. of break-time, this as far as i believe is mandatory in all EU-countries.... Anyway, you shoulden't put up with that kind of treatment, your boss and co-workers sounds like a bunch og dicks! But atleast it pays your bills.

My advice to you: Keep your lousy job while looking for others, else you'll end up having a broken back at the age of 40.

As far as I was aware, it was standard around the developed world that employers had to legally provide breaks on longer shifts? Or maybe I'm just spoiled by New Zealand law.

It's the law. Whether they do it or not is completely different.

I used to bussy at a Nightclub in melbourne. We were doing 12 hour shifts no breaks, severely understaffed for a few months straight. (i.e. 1500+ patrons... a dozen or so bartenders... 4 bussies initially. Got up to 7-8 eventually).
I actually had the manager crack the shits at me for rotating the bussies on 10 minute breaks 8 hours into the shift once.

Needless to say, I (eventually) told them where to stick it.

this sounds like your first job ever, if that is the case then you are fine. the reason your hands are red are because you are used to lounging around all day on the computer so you got girly hands for a bit til they man up from doing work

    Wow that sucks.

I would stay and search another job and when they day you get one just unleash all the rage you got inside on the most pathetic moron in that place.

And afterall you have just gotten some more on your paper.

My job sucks but not that much.. Im searching jobs while im working as a pre nurse.

First of all let me say, take that buddha out of the bathrom! Steal it, give it to someone else whatever, it does not belong in the bathroom!

Secondly, I used to work as a dishwasher and that job lasted about 5 days.. I was lucky enough to get a job making sandwiches at Subway until I then ended up getting a job in an office at minimum wage. That job led to another office job were I'm currently working and it's great.

Advice: Keep the shitty job until you can get another one, and start looking as soon as possible!

You're kidding right? Way to sweep someone under the carpet of generalization. The OP gave no indication to what his life or personal circumstances are. Just because he didn't have a job doesn't mean he doesn't work.

The reason his hands are red is because he has them in hot water for hours without breaks, along with chemicals in the water that specifically state should not touch bare skin.

    Stop being such a pig.

Clearly you have never worked in a restaurant/kitchen before.

How about you stick your hands under hot water+low costing dishwashing detergent for several hours a day, for a week without gloves and let me know how well your hands 'manned up'.

@OP: Those jobs are shit, I know. In my opinion, keep the job while looking whenever and wherever you can for a new one, literally apply for anything that you think you fit the requirements for. The job may suck, but not making money is far worse

I worked at mcds when i was 14-18, by far one of the crappiest jobs in the planet, and yes I did do dishes too, I also became swing manager at 17 and worked closing 5 nights a week [as the only manager] while still in highschool.

I'm just saying from experience and from his explanation that this is quite possibly his first job and jobs do suck like that, you just have to get used to the suck til you find a better one

I live in the Netherlands AND Belgium. I'm a legal citizen as well and I do pay taxes on whatever bit of money I earn.

This is my second job and even though I didn't really like the first one... I'd love to have it back right now. It also paid a lot better as well, but eh.. my dad made that impossible for me (he's a programmer - he created a little program that does the same I used to do, so I got laid off thanks to him)

At The Wizards Hat: Okay, his job is crappier, but still mine is pretty damn awful.

Another funny thing. The manager guy came up to us as well. He showed us a new plate we'd have to clean and said "don't break them, they cost 60 euros a piece and if you do break them, I'm not going to pay for a replacement". I think that means that, should we break it, WE have to pay for it. 60 euros is 12 hours of work for me.

Atm, I'm studying a lot (Chinese ftw!), so I don't have time to work very often - this job was part-time, so I thought it'd be perfect for me. It isn't.

I am going to look for another job while keeping this one for a bit longer. I hope I'll find something soon before I go into a rampage in a kitchen full of knives and other sharp objects! If you ever come across a newspaper article saying someone destroyed a whole kitchen with everything and everyone in it and it says The Netherlands... that's me.
I still feel like calling in sick if they don't start acting normal, though. I seriously count every second I'm there... I curse them all.

To the people who agreed with me, I thank you very much for your support on this matter. I know it sounds a bit corny, but hey, it at least made me smile for a bit
To the people who disagreed with me and say it's normal, I'd like to see you try it and then tell me it's okay.

I'm pretty sure these would be considered unacceptable conditions in the US, and we're widely considered to be among the more... unfortunate as far as labor laws go in the developed world. At a minimum the failure to supply some sort of protective gear for you're when handling chemicals is pretty bad. I also can't say that I've ever had a job (even in the restaurant industry) where we weren't allowed to go to the WC. The lack of a food break is kinda not all that unusual since you aren't working 8 hour shifts, but they won't let you get a glass of cold water or a soda from the station the wait staff uses? I know a lot of European restaurants don't have fountain soda dispensers (nearly all of them do in the US and staff is typically allowed to drink all they want since fountain soda is cheap), but surely there's an ice machine and somewhere to get water?

I'd look for another job ASAP. The kind of place you're working in sounds like the kind that treats their employees like absolute shit, on the theory that they can easily be replaced when they inevitably leave. Fulfill their expectations and do so. If you lack the skills to get an office job (and really, you seem pretty well able to type and read and write English, which I assume isn't your native language, you may be surprised at what you can get) try to find something in the "Front of the House" in a restaurant. Waiters, bartenders, and bus boys may not have the most glamorous job in the world, but you get to interact with people and don't have to figure out how to get "sauce du'jour" off the plates.

You've clearly never worked in a restaurant. The chemicals they use to clean dishes commercially are typically *very* harsh. We're not talking about a nice bottle of Dawn dish soap here. He's not likely to die from regular contact with them or anything, but he will likely continue to be uncomfortable for the entire time he has this job unless he gets gloves.

Not really crappy at all. I'm a senior Unix/Linux systems person. I get to play with really big computers and solve challenging technical problems. There are boring aspects (urg, it's audit day), and I don't exactly leap out of bed everyday thrilled to go to work, but all in all it's not a bad gig at all.

Edit to add: Wait... This place is fancy enough to be selling food on plates that cost 60 Euros a piece and they can't afford to give you gloves? Fuck that shit, get out now. I was thinking you were working for some little shit hole restaurant in the student district of Leuven or something. These guys are obviously just being bastards.
