Since I'm dirt poor (I buy food, clothes and drinks worth less than 10 euros a week while living in a very expensive country), I decided I needed a job.
So... eh... here's my story:
Not too long ago, I applied for a job (I do the dishes) and guess what? I got it! I was very happy, until I actually had to go working.
My first day, AKA 'test day':
I was scheduled from 12:00 'til 18:00 on a Saturday. I didn't really expected to have to do too much work, but I was DEAD wrong. At one point I felt I just had to run away, since the sight of all those dirty plates just struck fear into my heart. I didn't. At around 16:00, the second guy showed up to help me a bit. Things went faster, but not very much.
At the end of the day, I reviewed what had happened: I was extremely stressed, had to go to the toilet (wasn't allowed a break) and was very hungry and thirsty (wasn't allowed to eat or drink).
Second day, AKA 'newb day':
I was scheduled from 18:00 'til closing time (when the last customers leave and everything else is clean). This time I knew it was going to be a lot of work and I was totally right. Again, I worked for 6.5 hours - no break, no food, no drinks besides hot water. I had to clean stuff I imagine never to have been cleaned before without gloves or any other form of protection. I got yelled at by the guy who makes the sauces for being lazy (he didn't make them, he was just doing... nothing). At about 21:00 I really had to take a piss, but wasn't allowed to. I finally was able to take a piss at 01:30 when I was back home.
Another thing: I had to clean stuff with chemicals - on the box/bottle it said: don't let X come in contact with your skin, clothes, etc, etc.. - again without gloves or any other form of safety.
My hands are still red, more than half a week later since I have to work with boiling hot water all the time.
All this wasn't all that bad. I also had to clean the toilet and what I saw there really almost made my stomach turn! On the toilet, in a Grand Café, I saw a Buddha statue. I myself am Buddhist and I really can't imagine how anybody could possibly think a statue of a very important person in a religion belongs in such a place! Why not? First of all: Buddhists never sit with their feet in the direction of the Buddha, second: it's a toilet - toilets are awful places for any religion. And last but certainly not least: it's a Grand Café, meaning they serve alcohol. The Buddha was totally against alcohol and other forms of intoxicants, yet someone still decided to forget all reason and buy a statue of him!
To show just how cruel the people there are. My co-worker had a massive nose-bleed. He was bleeding all over himself, on me and on the dishes, yet he still wasn't allowed to take a break. "Just wash it off again and do it right this time" was what they told him. He later told me that he'd never had a nose-bleed there before, so this was his first time - he seemed to be pretty concerned about it.
So... eh...
How crappy is YOUR job?
