the only thing u will need from GW 1 is the lore (( u can get it from books if u r so interested ))

and in order to please the GW 1 players , arena net decided to give vanity pets and costumes to the old players from GW 1 but it won't have effect on GW 2 ..

the difference in GW 2 over any other game are alot :

1- The quests are interactive and in a form of event , the outcome of every event will directly affect the game world around you. If an enemy dredge army is marching out of their main base, players will be asked to mobilize with their allies and help destroy the army. If the dredge army is defeated, other events will cascade out from there. Players will be able battle their way inside the dredge base, face off against their commander, rescue captured friendly troops being held in the dredge prisons, and even hold the captured base while fighting waves of dredge, who arrive from deep underground to try and take back their home.
    Dynamic Events

If, on the other hand, players fail to destroy the army, it will establish a fort in friendly player territory. From there, the dredge will send shipments of troops and supplies to the fort from the main base while building up walls, turrets, and siege engines to help defend it. Enemy dredge forces will then begin to move out from their newly established fort to attack friendly player locations in the area, sending snipers out into the hills, sending assault team forces to capture friendly player villages, and trying to smash down friendly fortifications with massive dredge walkers. All of these events continue to cascade out into further chains of events where cause and effect is directly related to the player's actions.

2-Skills in guild wars 2 can vary depending on the environment around you (( you can use a pool of water or pile of rocks )) also your skills can be combined with other classes skill to make more powerful attacks (( for example an elemental makes a wall of fire then a ranger shoot fire arrows through the wall ))

3- personal story : each decision you take in the game or in the events will build up your personal story , you can be a bad ass or hero (( same like fable and mass effect i guess ))

you can check alot more about that in details from there site

Its a whole new game, separate from Guild Wars.

It is a sequel yes, but its really new. Even Guild Wars veterans would be going into to the game with little to know knowledge of how the game will be like. The PvP is different, the PvE is different, everything is a complete revamp. The only thing that is the same is the lore from the first game.

I am excited. I've played Guild Wars when I was on my WoW breaks (since its F2P and the sequel will be too) and its a really great game, but the sequel just looks way more amazing.

There will be dynamic world events, questing, fully voiced characters, and the gameplay is solid.
PvP will be very interesting because you can dodge out of player's attacks and what not.

Overall, it looks like a great game (no WoW-killer, it's not TRYING TO KILL WOW, nor is SWTOR. Rift however is. At least, that is what they keep saying on their trailer "we're not in Azeroth anymore"..cocky bastards.) that will be a great addition to the pool of MMORPGs.

And they said that if you can play Guild Wars right now (on your PC), you can definitely play Guild Wars 2 on that same PC.

Also one thing I really am interested in seeing is the removal of the triad of roles we normally find in MMO's, that being the tank-healer-DPS triad.

For me the biggest change from others MMOS is that they removed quests completely ... this alone is making Guild Wars 2 next gen MMO in my opinion (and of course combat which seems even better compared to Tera for example, personal story but not everyone will be interested into this feature of course, and character customization which is really really unique - no more talents trees.. yep )

And this is one epic boss fight

PS : as mentioned before there is no tank , healer roles in this game ... everyone will survive with his own skills in the fights

Just saw a great video from PAX East

    http://www.justin.tv/alienwarearena/b/281335903

Actual gameplay is between 15:00 and 43:25 if you want to avoid people standing around at PAX or trailer loops.

This is pretty much what got me excited for this game, and the no tank or healers, =o, that's a nice fancy twist.

I actually find that a complete turn off. I like having different roles, and I am a big fan of support roles. Not sure how a no roles setup will affect ingame mechanics, after all healing and tanking have given us massive variety to the encounters in WoW over the years.

well I have to disagree with you in that point as tanking doesn't affect the difficulty of the encounter , I don't like the fact that one player is taking constant damage from the boss and if he fails the raid fails , but when everybody in the encounter gets a share of responsibility equally that would be better , take for example any raid boss in wow ... will it have any difference if wow removed the direct damage done to the tank and kept only the raid wide abilities ?
besides tanking and healing where always a reason to limit the fun in raids due to the difficulty to find good players in those roles

You are type of people who didn't think outside the box... again..ask yourself.. what is so fun on supporting roles like tank or healer in standard MMO? (I like support roles too..but for a too long time I thought that support = healing/tank )

In fact, in GW2 you can play support with any class. Of course..some are suited more for support but still...every class can support group in some form...and healing/tanking is just minor part of that.

Basically you're saying that bosses will only hit your for whatever damage you yourself can heal... which just means that there is less element of risk involved doesn't it? As for the comments regarding finding good players in those roles limiting fun, I guess in a way it does but I still maintain that the content will be less challenging.

Why am I not thinking outside of the box? Surely letting everyone tank, heal and dps at the same time is just another form of homogenisation? Specialising roles is what makes one class different and hence interesting, compared to another.

I don't think that support = tank/healer, I consider those to be main roles. Hybrids, buff classes, those are support classes.

As for your closing sentence, it makes no sense. If there are no tanks and healers, why is tanking and healing a minor part of... what? Clarify that a bit?

The game will have different roles, however, it won't be healer/tank/dps, roles will be closer to support/control/damage

instead of the boss hitting the tank like an idiot, he will take other targets, to make sure he doesn't zerg down your clothies (elementalist/necromancer/mesmer???please god) classes like the guardian can use defensive skills like shields etc. Also, you can dodge incoming attacks by rolling out of the way, projectiles are also not homing like in most mmo's.

There is some PAX East 2011 GW2 footage here and more info about the Thief.

I am glad they aren't doing Tank/Healer/DPS like other games. Some classes can take damage better than others, but you don't need a "Tank" to do content.
