    If anyone can, please tell me what happened at December 31st, 1999 or January 1st, 2000 because I was too young at the time. If there riots and all that crap, and the economy did fuck up, then the OP could be right about the same shit probably happening in 2012.

    Nope, nothing happened. No riots or anything. Then again, people didn't expect "the world to end", but rather they were expecting PCs and the like to crash and/or try to annihilate humanity.
    Fun times.

    There were some people who went crazy though, but nothing large-, middle- or even small-scale occured. [BTW: There were more virgins who managed to score on 31.12.1999 than ever before. Go figure :P]
