    Puzzled about new GPU

Hi people, im currently having a oerformance puzzle:

I have tow computers, one is a 17" laptop from HP with a ATI 5650 1GB VRAM, and i run wow at 60 FPS at ALL TIMES, with everithing on "high" and some on ultra, xcept for the shadows, and i just bought a desktop with an NVIDIA 315 1GB VRAM too, and a 23" monitor, and wow is running at 25FPS AT MOST, with settings on "good" or "Fair".

Now , this doesnt make any sense at all, since the new one is > than the laptop :

    CPU: laptop i5 , desktop i7 2600 at 3,40 GH
RAM : both have 4 GB
GPUS: the ones depicted at the beggining.

I have tried taking the screen resolution to 1600x900 from 1920x1080, with no success, and if i take them all down to "loW" i get a peak of +/- 80 FPS, whereas on the laptop i get +115 FPS at low.

Been discussing it over vent , and 2 or 3 people have similar specs with no FPS drops, any help?

    Thx in advance

    1. Download or buy Powersuite

    2. If you downloaded it, use this key ; < snipped >

Run all the three programs you got with powersuite, one of them is a Drive updater which will seek for updates automatically.

    1) what resolution are you using on the laptop?
    2) Nvidia 315 is a shitty graphics card, not aimed at games AT ALL and is a card to use for HTPC.
    3) wrong forum

Nvidia 315 is a very low entry video card compared to the ATI 5650.

Ok, thanks guys, now, would you recommend a good one on terms of price/benchamark for the aforementioned specs? (i7 2600 @ 3,40 GZ and 4GB Ram) for a 23" display at 1920 x 1090 res? the idea would be to avoid bottlenecking the CPU, since its from the latest gamma available here in Spain, and later on , adding the usage of Fraps to the equation, for raid recording and so on.

just for the record, the desktop is a Packard Bell iMedia S3850.

    Thx again,

The Radeon HD 6950 is nice And if you get a reference model you can unlock it to the 6970.
If that's too pricey try the 6850.
PS if you get the 6850 don't get an HIS brand, bastards shipped me a defective card >_<

That computer only has a tiny amount of clearance for the GPU, you may not be able to fit anything but a single slot one. Entirely a waste of money.

e: Buying a 2600 and not 2500k or 2600k is just like throwing money into a fire.

This thread eerily reminds me of a time I got banned for proving a point....Low end GPU in with a higher end CPU causing bottlenecking.

However the GPU you have is very low end and probably is bottlenecking the system. I didn't even know Packard Bell still existed. Back in the old days they were terrible computers with no room in them. I'd have to assume Chaud was right.

Packard Bell iMedia? Should've known and Chaud is completely right.

    Downsides to that system :
    - small case
    - motherboard layout combined with the case prevents you from using a dual slot graphics card while pretty much all good graphics cards these days are dual slot
    - power supply, more than likely not enough to power a card good enough for what you want

Best card that comes to mind that I know has a single slot version would have to be the Radeon HD5770, not sure if there are any higher ones but this one should work. Depends on your power supply though, mind checking what it says on the label?

There is a single-slot HD6850, but as far as I know you can only get that in Japan so far.
Also, that card draws all of its power out of the PCIe-connector.
Here's the site for people who know Japanese

One option would be to use a slim single slot card like these:
XFX HD 5770 model: XFX HD-577X-ZMF3
    PowerColor HD6850 model: AX6850 1GBD5-I2DH

Both of them are decent mid ranged gaming cards and will give you DX11 support. I'm not sure on the wattage of your power supply, but keep in mind that both of these cards also have the manufacturer system requirements of a 500 watt PSU and 1 PCIe 6pin connector. Your system also has that odd PSU placement, and I'm not sure if a standard PSU replacement would even fit in it, which leads me to your other option.

You could also consider migrating the system to another case with a sufficient PSU if necessary. That would open up the door to a lot more graphics card options as well as provide superior cooling for both the GPU and CPU, along with other components.

Also, on top of the previous advice - Wow is CPU intensive so a new graphics card wouldn't neccessarily improve performance if you have a terrible CPU.
