    PC Problems! Very Strange...

    Hey guys!

Right, first up let me say I have a degree (for real) in Network Management, so from a networking perspective I have done -everything- possible to come up with a solution to this problem. I am literally at my wits end, and would really appreciate any real feedback you could provide. I have 2 issues that need solving.

First up, in 25 man raids sometimes my screen will freeze and I have to restart wow. Now, this doesn't happen very often but when it does it's annoying as hell. I have over the cause of the last 4 weeks gradually played in raids with no addons / essential addons only / a mixture and the problem has persisted every time. There isn't an addon I use that has remained enabled for all of the tests i've run. I used the WoW repair tool, re-installed windows at one stage during this occurring (that was 5 weeks ago when I got a new HDD, which still didn't solve the issue). It only happens when raiding is actually going on, not in the low activity times like trash etc. I Played with very low GFX (I have a GTX 460) and varying levels with freezing still occurring occasionally. My GFX card isn't overheating and neither is my CPU bottlenecked as I have a 3.2ghz quad core. My mobo, HDD, RAM and GFX card are all less than 6 months old. I've rolled back my GFX drivers to an older version with no luck. I've scanned for viruses a few times, i've also uninstalled every program that I installed since the problems began and ran wow again with no luck. The freezes keep occurring! Any help would be awesome

Second issue, I just got a new router from my landlord after my last one herped and derped hard. Basically, the old router was dropping it's connection every 3-4 minutes for about 10 seconds a pop. Obviously I diagnosed the issue as the router and this new one has been working fine, sort of. So the problem still occurs, the line drops -sometimes- but not entirely. For example I can play WoW and LoL and SC2 etc with no issues and remain connected the entire time so it can retain a buffered connection (but I don't see lag "leaps" in game at all, nor lag of any kind). The issue only occurs when i'm connecting to other players, so on SC2 playing with a group of mates i'll get disconnected hard and often. On TS, talking -after- I have raided (never during, which is odd, always works 100% fine when i'm raiding and on TS). PvP chat with a mate was a no go. Skype works fine however, but Mumble and Ventrillo have the same problems. The filter is brand new, as is the router which is frustrating as hell. If it was a problem with UDP then Skype would be playing up also, and it works fine even when I am playing WoW or something else. I thought maybe my cable was a little frayed so swapped in a new one just to see the same issues occur again. It's not the ISP side of things as connecting to my next door neighbours wireless his router stats have exactly the same as mine pretty much and all the ranges are well within acceptable parameters. My housemate using wireless says he's not having issues either, but then he's not on the PC 24/7 like I am

Anyone got any insight on either of these issues? I'll be checking back and updating regularly with additional info if it becomes available or if anyone requests it.

The first issue should be mended by updating your graphics card drivers.
Not a networking genius, so the second one is beyond me.

I would have guessed driver problem for the first issue but since you've reinstalled everything I think hardware is at fault. Test RAM http://www.memtest.org/ and check temperatures while you're playing games in case something is overheating.
Never going to log into this garbage forum again as long as calling obvious troll obvious troll is the easiest way to get banned.
    Trolling should be.

I wouldn't consider software to be drivers. (Despite the fact that they are.) With that in mind, I assumed he didn't update them. Meh. /shrug

Type of router is helpful, as is anything else you use the connection for. I for example, have a system that's on 24/7 connected to uTorrent, IRC, DC++, and some other stuff. But my router is an actual Mini-ITX PC running Linux, so it can handle all that at once. Many home routers, cannot.

The first problem I might have some experience with.. If you have updated drivers and all of that jazz, check your graphics card.. and see if the fan is clogged with dust.. Happened to me and my comp kept freezing in raids.. Cleaned it out good and no prob..

The GFX issue is a faulty card. Hate to say it but your card is on its way out. You didn't mention SLi so that's the only other possibility. If however you are using SLi (which should have been mentioned), your SLi bus may not be a full x16 in which case your GFX are bottlenecking, crashing, and (sometimes) recovering. As for the router, it could be your ISP. Within the past couple weeks I've occasionally (and randomly) lost my internet connection while maintaining full LAN connectivity. A little digging determined they were doing infrastructure upgrades in the area, and now that they're finished my connection is back to stable AND faster than it used to be. You might just have a bad connection somewhere behind your modem.

For your gfx problem i would check the psu, it seems the only one you havent checked. The freezes can be an issue with voltage dropping to a critical point.

    are you running windows vista?

In an effort to answer everyones questions:

    - My memory is fine
    - My GFX card is clean and -not- overheating, temps are never unusual even under load
    - PSU is fine
    - My houses network utilisation is non-existent. I live with one other guy who doesn't use the internet much at all, and when i'm gaming I only ever run the game and maybe a VoIP program at once. My system is never overloaded.
    - I actually had to back-date and re-install my GFX drivers a week ago to try and fix an issue with steam (this actually turned out to be bitdefender which i've un-installed) so they are fine
    - It's not on SLI
    - I'm running windows 7

Here's my DxDiag for more info if you want it:

I wasn't talking about overloading your system. Some home gateways/routers are really bad at what they do. Some overheat easily, some have problems with even a minute amount of connections, not throughput, connections.

I know, and i've previously gone through 2 Netgear D150s that developed very similar problems to the one i'm experiencing now. Currently i'm using a DG824M.

I know it's not the router forr several reasons, which I won't post as I dislike getting technical where there really isn't a need, but suffice to say after several tests and diagnostics I have determined that the issue is not the router. However, neither is my PC or the connections in between, so this leaves few options: Either the router is broken and hiding it very well, or there is some faulty piece of hardware somewhere along the infrastructure that is not showing up even after multiple tests, or the ISP is dropping my connection for whatever reason (which I wasn't able to get out of them on the second phone call this afternoon).

I've just re-flashed my router anyway so lets see if that solves this issue.

On a side note i'm using a Belkin wireless AP to get wireless as the router didn't come with it (lower spec, cheaper, landlord had the belkin sitting around so saved himself £50 can't complain). My connection is hardline ofc.

Wow... that thing is ancient. I was having issues with my connection, severe packet loss if you used the connection beyond say 50kB/sec in either direction. It grew the more the upload/download grew. I tested my connections internally for quite a while, I eliminated my router, as good as it is. Comcast was out here MANY times, clear signal every time. Turns out it was the SB6120 Modem I was using, the modem is fine, but for whatever reason it would not provision properly on their Business Class service. I eventually LET them put in their SMC Gateway POS and the packet loss vanished. Now I'm just waiting for the day that my usage causes the thing to crash, which i've warned them of.

My point being, it could still be the hardware.

About your computer problem, next time your game crashes, open event viewer and see what exactly stopped working, it will give a good lead on what's causing your crashes, without that it's very hard to see what the problem is, as dxdiag only shows a few of your drivers, but doesn't say which one is malfunctioning

First issue sounds like heat to me. If it locks up when you are doing a lot of stuff, but not when there is a lul in the action... Heat. Definitely.

Second issue: Have you replaced your modem? Sounds like you are overworking that too. Did the connection issue start recently? If so, then your modem may be going. Check with your ISP, see if they can hook you up with a new one.

Erm what kind of freeze are you referring to ? Is it one of those this application blablabla isn't responding blablabla and the window itself goes kinda whitish with the round working mouseicon ? Because those are probably related to memory issues - at least they were for me.

I can pretty much guarantee event viewer will say "Video display driver stopped responding and was recovered". Unless of course he has to hard reboot, in which case event viewer will say nothing.

Years ago I had the strangest network problem. I would suddenly get disconnected and had to restart my pc for the network to work again. The disconnects only happened with certain programs and certain actions therein (e.g. there was a 90% chance of disconnect when I turned in a quest).

After lots of searching the problem was some very malicious software that had entered my system and did apparently nothing than cause disconnects at certain actions. You could try running HijackThis and see if any unknown processes are running.

HiJackThis can be very dangerous tool unless you're 101% sure of what you're doing. It does not tell what the automatically loaded items are just lists the names. If you turn wrong thing off, you might not be able to boot anymore.
