For portable devices, and about $20, I use http://www.headphone.com/selection-g...oss-ksc-75.php they are amazing!

Through my desktop or any other source (I use a 12AX7 tube digital to analog converter) I prefer the Grado 225i http://www.amazon.com/Grado-Prestige.../dp/B0006GCCN6

They are expensive, about $200, and worth every damn penny. With these, it was like having a black and white 1950's TV and upgrading to a high end 1080 HD color LCD. Best $200 I have ever spent.

Edit: I have tried several of Sennheiser's mid range (200-300 US) and I have always gone back to my Grado 225... They are an around the ear headset, but are open unlike Sennheiser's closed style. You make more noise to those around you, but the bass is 100X better, highs 100X clearer and cleaner. I have played in bands for 15+ years (bass and guitar), listening to music with these is like being center stage front row.

Also I wouldn't recommend any of those design ear-plugs, the piece of rubber in your ear is annoying and slips out most of the time.

it would be better to take traditional earplugs with hooks (to hook it onto your ear) or with an extra piece of rubber around it to fit it better with the way your ear is shaped.
Funny. Since traditional earbuds, the ipod standard ones for example, NEVER stay in my ears. They also don't reach the quality that in canal buds do, partially because they allow more outside sound to get in. Now for some people in canal buds are uncomfortable, and if you have really waxy ears, then yeah the rubber tips are garbage. Which is why I recommend Comply Foam tips. Some good phones come with them, but they're available separately as well. They're not cheap, nor are the expensive, but totally worth the money imho.

To K1borG, Sennheiser has been in the headphone business for practically forever. They have some of the best headphones out there, but so do companies like Shure, Ultimate Ears, and several others. Each company doing better in a specific area at different times.

This, do this, do eeet. It's really good if you can get them at a local store, that way if they don't suit you, you can return them easily, since they don't usually put in canal buds out for customer testing for obvious reasons.

I'm another big Grado SR225 fan. Best "rock music" headphones around. The Koss KSC75 is great at capturing a similar sound for dirty cheap, totally agree.
Moonkin maybe looking for raiding guild.

All i can say is the CX400 and CX500 are the same aside from the cable/in-line volume control.
