    Unhappy New Computer Frequently Crashing

    Hey there,

I've been gifted a brand new computer about three weeks ago and I've been having nothing but trouble with it since. 'Specs are below, followed by the situation:

    Hardware:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
    Resolution: 1366x768 (recommended)
    Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) X4 955 Processor, 3.20 GHz
    RAM: 4GB
    System type: 64-bit
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
    CPU temp: 34C
    GPU temp: 40C

    Software
-Drivers are up to date, to the best of my knowledge
    -Microsoft Security Essentials
    -Spybot: Search and Destroy
    -CCleaner
    -Adobe Flash Player 10
    -Microsoft Silverlight
    -Google Chrome

To start off, I'm not entirely tech-knowledgeable but I do know some of the basics. I'm not sure if it's exactly "crashing", but the problems often occur when I have WoW (or Darkspore) and an internet browser going at the same time. I originally started with Mozzila Firefox on this computer, but the latest version was unbearable when it came to using Flash (Facebook games, ftl). Currently, I'm using Google Chrome. As for a description of the problem: the computer screen will freeze (unmovable cursor), and you will either hear the game music or a rapid-clicking sound.

Following a perfect performance for the first two days, the computer would crash 1-3 times every single day for a week and a half. I took the computer back to the store (Best Byte, Canada); they had told me that it was merely a conflict between the Curse Client and AVG anti-virus and that the computer otherwise passed the Hardware & Software stress-tests. I removed AVG, switched to Microsoft Security Essentials and it didn't make any apparent changes. Eventually I just removed the Curse Client altogether. Things were fairly smooth for a few days after making these changes, but it has come back to crashing roughly once a day. I also found a Notice in the Action Center that mentioned that the Graphics Card Driver had stopped responding at some point but unfortunately the info in the notice disappeared when I tried to Archive it, for some reason.

So in the end, I've run out of ideas. I know this isn't a exactly a great computer, but perhaps I'm pushing it too hard by multitasking (just a game + browsing forums). Honestly, I doubt that's it because my previous 8+ year old computer was able to handle it to a degree. On the other hand, perhaps Bestbyte wasn't very forthcoming regarding a problem with the computer they built themselves. They are a reputable computer shop in my area from what I know. They claimed to have installed a program that should alert me if any further conflicts arise between programs but I honestly haven't been able to find the program at all.

On a likely unrelated note (imo), this computer cannot enter the "Turn off Display" mode without being unable to deactivate it (or the computer crashes, I can't tell). From what I've told, this is just an inherent problem with Windows but my other W7 operated computer is completely fine with this setting. Also, the monitor for this computer blew after 2 days of use; my luck sucks

If anyone could lend a hand, it would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR: shit doh' werk, life sux

A report of your CPU and GPU temp at the time will help, as will a dxdiag.

Erm, I just found it all but is there key parts of it I should just paste or do I paste it entirely? -_-

Paste the whole thing, por favor.

It could be a heat issue or a driver issue. That's usually the main 2 problems off the top of my head. As someone mentioned what is everything running at temp wise?

I had that same processor and it was bad and overheating itself. But it might be a heat issue but over all a dxdiag will help us.

Added dxdiag and the CPU temp (~34C, with a high of 37C), but I can't seem to find the GPU temp in the Catalyst Control Center. From what I could find, there's not always a built in thermometer?

    Try finding it through GPU-Z.

Ah, alright. 40C is where the GPU temperature is at

I can't seem to find the problem. It's definitely not a temperature problem, as 40C is very decent as far as heat goes.

It's a pretty nice system you got there actually, it might even be hardware-related (GPU) at this point. Not sure what the next step would be.

Try disabling hardware acceleration for flash.

(right click any flash object such as a youtube vid and go from there)

When you get that your graphics drivers have suddenly shut down and restarted its most likely a software conflict, or old drivers on some program thats running. that or your graphics card burned itself out. i had a 5700 series before the fan's 2 pin connecter poped out on me once and just gave itself a heatstroke and died. check it out.

Since I've switched to Chrome instead of Firefox, I haven't had any noticeable problems with flash. I haven't even really been on any sites that use Flash, unless the mmo-champion advertisements use them (heh, I've no clue). I'll try it, but if that's even the problem it will take 3-5 days to even tell if the problem is fixed; otherwise I know I'd likely get a fluke and have no crashes for two days.

It's a good chance that's what the problem is, but I've no clue how to tackle that. The guys who put this computer together claimed they put a program that detects conflicts between programs, but I've seen no trace of it (if such a program even exists; that seems too easy).

Nope, Hardware Acceleration on websites isn't the cause. It crashed today. I notice that the computer will crash when I do an action in WoW (open the mailbox, the AH, the map or sometimes when I use an ability).

I've updated the info just a little bit but unfortunately I don't have the detailed receipt for every piece of hardware's manufacturer, model, etc, that the sticky suggests to be provided. If there's anything important that's missing from the info, I'll get to work as best as I can on finding it.

Anyone else have a suggestion? I suppose I could bring it back to the shop, but I fear they'll just give me another false reason as to what the problem is and then charge me for it.

Well. There's two things I can think of.
1.) It's a graphics card issue. It could be a damaged graphics card, so whoever bought it or gifted it to you should be contacted for warranty work.
2.) A memory problem. Try running this http://www.memtest86.com/
Also, obligatory bump. Let's solve this guy's problem!

I don't have a credit card to buy the program on that site, but I found a Memory Diagnostics test on Windows 7 itself; it came through clean.

It's likely just a damaged graphics card like you say. I guess the best thing I can do now is to come up with a thorough description of the problems and what I've tried, and send it back.

Thanks a lot to all who replied. I did get quite a few things confirmed and I've learned some more, even.

Haha, no I knew it had that page but I didn't understand what it was offering. I mistook the part about the CD-burning. Anyway, I got it all worked out (Google = decent teacher) and it passed with zero errors. Sigh...
