    [Movie] The Green Latern

I saw this movie this afternoon and, knowing nothing of the Comic strip went in fairly open-minded.

However, the movie disappointed on multiple front without really enhancing the genre in any way. I felt the Green Lantern was an odd enough Super Hero to start with and was even less believable than most other hero flicks. Even Thor tried to connect the Worlds in a way and had a lot more charm about it. The Green Lantern was just meh.

However, the weakest link in the movie wasn't the Superhero himself, his abilities or the lore behind it, but rather the script.

The way the film is shot is very confusing at times as it tends to jump around between multiple scenes without filling in the blanks. The cuts seem to be rather random as if the producer was trying too hard to keep the movie around 100 minutes. Another problem was the villain, or villains if you will. While the space entity was fairly impressive it didn't get nearly enough screen-time to give it any kind of back story or motivation. It was simply evil for no better reason. The real weakness though was the whole subplot with the Brain-Minion guy who....doesn't actually do anything.

That's right, we follow a nerdy scientist for a good 20 minutes of the movie and it really doesn't amount to anything at all. He gets a fight-scene, but again, it's for no reason and just seems random. Other than that he doesn't actually do anything and his whole existence is a total waste of screen time.

Movies like the Green Lantern really make we wonder who and how movie scripts are approved. It's quite apparent that in many cases there's no real concept of story or character development. Stuff just happens.

One thing this film did boast though was probably one of the hottest and sweetest love interests a superhero has ever had. I mean, that babe was just....hmmm.

For the future though I'd like Hollywood to limit themselves to truely interesting superheros that actually have real stories to tell. Leave the Space Operas to Sci-Fi.

You could at least spell "Lantern" right.

Too bad. I wanted to see it, just because it's Ryan Reynolds. Guess I shouldn't bother.

If my friends decide to go see it, I'll go, but I'm not jumping out of my chair.

Haha their screwed to because they spent over 300 million in production and advertising costs. Maybe that will teach them not to spend so much money on a mediocre actor and a mediocre Super Hero. XD

I know Gl.. That being said I haven't seen the movie either but these reviews confirm my suspicions about the movie..

    1. Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordon? I get he's a comic book nerd too but he doesn't fit. Hal Jordon isn't a frat boy as far as I've read.

    2. The trailer is the movie.. In brightest day, in blackest PEW PEW Green fire works! eye candy, eye candy, no plot aside from the origin.

I'll rent it because.. who doesn't love shiny things? But I believe rotten tomatoes for the most part.

Sure Maybe Green lantern might end up having a bad plot but honestly i don't trust reviewers that don't even know his name.
Sometimes comic adaptations, even reviewed by movie critics, do get the reviews they deserve. Even though it's based off a comic, parts of the story will be adapted for a two hour long movie, like most comic book movies, since it's not a ongoing series that always has more to the plot (AKA comic issues). Movies need to simplify things that isn't worth fitting in two hours time, this is why comic book movies will have such adaptation.

Rotten Tomatoes is a collaboration of MANY critics sharing there thoughts. The site let's you choose "Ripe" or "Rotten" for the review, and then comment on it. Then the site adds up the "Rotten" and "Ripe" reviews and figures out the percentages. This is why Rotten Tomatoes is so favored, because it isn't just saying it's GOOD or BAD, it's just showing you a percentage of the community and instead says, "X% Think this, Y% Think that." It's actually probably one of the most respected sources for movie reviews within these last few years.

So basically, I don't doubt at all that Green Lantern probably blows.

Doesn't mean I don't want to see it, I just agree with most Rotten Tomato trends.

In all honesty Spiderman 3 was probably better and I haven't even seen Green Lantern yet.

Not to say Spiderman 3 wasn't horrible, cause it was <.< just saying how bad Green Lantern is sounding...

You're probably right, I just think Marvel is so much more badass

I'm with you on seeing it for yourself. At the same time, how do you not like Rotten Tomatoes? It's a collection of pretty much every major critic there is. And ones who's reputations aren't very high are sorted separately from higher thought of critics.

I'm expecting the movie to be horrible, but who gives a crap... $10 isn't much and if anything it's worth the price to make jokes about the movie with friends, at least in my opinion.

You are absolutely entitled to your own opinion. People can and do like movies for very different reasons.

But you have to accept that movies are a different medium than comic strips, and thus are measured by different standards. Western Movies are expected to be roughly 90-120 minutes long and tell a suitable story for such a time frame.

And again, it wasn't so much the Superhero, Hal Jordan, the acting or anything that put be off it, but rather the craftsmanship of the movie (e.g. the editing and the script). None of that blame can be put on DC comics.

But then again, maybe it's time for a Superhero flick to fail since we've been getting just a little too oversaturate with them in the past few years.

It goes on the level of Fantastic Four, it was super corny, but at least this one had some great eyecandy to go along with it. But, who am I to say what to see and what not to see, Michael Bay films get bad reviews all the time and I see them for the special effects, this is just, pretty much one of those, so if you don't mind that, then you will like this movie, or not mind it, and just go meh. And then forget about it the next morning, nothing really...shines out, sticks in your head with this one. Shame, I really wanted this one to be great. DC needs to step their game up, Batman can't be the only thing they got going for them in the movie world.

I saw it and I personally thought it was pretty good. I didn't go into it expecting another Dark Knight or anything.

I think the problem with superhero movies now is that they are trying to keep the film so short, that it ends up cutting out the best part of a superhero story; character. The only reason Dark Knight was so incredible imho was because there was a ton of character development, but the movie HAS to be long for that to occur.

that is very true, however it is very easy to mess that up. I noticed with long films there is an edge where it can either get really boring or can be really good. and i feel like there have been more boring movies then good movies. i haven't seen green lantern yet but i am going tonight. my friends who love green lantern like my self have all told me that the movie is crap. But like any movie, people will have their opinons. as for me im excited to see it tonight.
