I saw this movie this afternoon and, knowing nothing of the Comic strip went in fairly open-minded.
However, the movie disappointed on multiple front without really enhancing the genre in any way. I felt the Green Lantern was an odd enough Super Hero to start with and was even less believable than most other hero flicks. Even Thor tried to connect the Worlds in a way and had a lot more charm about it. The Green Lantern was just meh.
However, the weakest link in the movie wasn't the Superhero himself, his abilities or the lore behind it, but rather the script.
The way the film is shot is very confusing at times as it tends to jump around between multiple scenes without filling in the blanks. The cuts seem to be rather random as if the producer was trying too hard to keep the movie around 100 minutes. Another problem was the villain, or villains if you will. While the space entity was fairly impressive it didn't get nearly enough screen-time to give it any kind of back story or motivation. It was simply evil for no better reason. The real weakness though was the whole subplot with the Brain-Minion guy who....doesn't actually do anything.
That's right, we follow a nerdy scientist for a good 20 minutes of the movie and it really doesn't amount to anything at all. He gets a fight-scene, but again, it's for no reason and just seems random. Other than that he doesn't actually do anything and his whole existence is a total waste of screen time.
Movies like the Green Lantern really make we wonder who and how movie scripts are approved. It's quite apparent that in many cases there's no real concept of story or character development. Stuff just happens.
One thing this film did boast though was probably one of the hottest and sweetest love interests a superhero has ever had. I mean, that babe was just....hmmm.
For the future though I'd like Hollywood to limit themselves to truely interesting superheros that actually have real stories to tell. Leave the Space Operas to Sci-Fi.
