Now with the am3+ socket what kind of coolers fit it? I looked at the $100 corsair H60 waterblock and didnt see it saying it had support so held off on buying any aftermarket coolers.

Could anyone tell me ones that support the socket? Im willing to do water loops as well up to $200 in parts/radiator. Please let me know.

We don't even know how the amd chip will perform, when it will be out, or how much. Intel will just come back with something twice as better.

    ah, New Egg FTW.

    Nice setup.

OT: When AM2+ came out, AM2 coolers supported the AM 2+ , so I see no reason why it wouldn't.

Good Luck with the new rig!

    1. BIASED. They will come out with something twice as better, but for 4 times the price.
    2. OT- I'm guessing you can use the same coolers on an AM3+ then you can on an AM3, considering you can drop an AM3 into an AM3+ socket and vice versa, you just don't get some of the good features you would if you dropped an AM3+ in an AM3+ instead of an AM3 socket. If I had to say you could use the exact same cooling.

AMD's only market is the mid ranged and entry level because of their slow processors. If anything it's AMD's fault for allowing Intel to consume the market. Bulldozer has been stated that it will compete pricewise with Sandybridge-1155. AM3 heatsinks have also been stated to be forwards compatible with AM3+ sockets.

Last I heard bulldozers were still delayed till the second half of the year, yeah? ._.

Unless AMD has come out saying they're releasing them soon I'd rather pick up a i3/5 2xxx CPU and a proper 1155 socket mobo, and instead swap those out if Bulldozers far outperform them. :U

There'll be new mobos by the time bulldozer does come out if they're still delayed, so getting a mobo now would/could be very silly. Socket won't change if you bought the AM3+ compatible boards, no... but none of them are genuine AM3+ boards last I saw. Just AM3 boards they found will be compatible. >>

1000W PSU is a total overkill. Go for a lower wattage gold PSU.

1000W isn't overkill. it gives me headroom for overclocking and the 3 hard drives ill be taking out of this rig. and some other stuff.

I think Bulldozers are currently scheduled for August. However, we should see the first benchmarks and viable tests in a few weeks.

As for the build, it basically screams "I shit money". If you're willing to spend 500 USD on a GPU then there's really not much to contribute from our side. You're basically getting the best of the best that there is. If you have money to squander why not add 3D?

Also bear in mind that AMDs Southern Island GPUs are scheduled to be released this year, which is both a die shrink and architecture revamp. So your 500 USD GPU won't be top-dog for more than a few months.

well its $794 in 3 gpu's doesnt count the 6950 in this rig atm thats not used much. wanted to replace it cause ASUS coolers are better than the single fan sapphire one.

Slow processors? PFFFT. Stop spouting your biased. I'm not gonna say intels are bad, but AMD is perfectly acceptable. OT- Definitely go for the Bulldozer and the 1000w op.

I can tell you the same. AMD is fine, but what he's picked is an absolute waste of money if he's using it for gaming. Not just the processor, but combined with the mobo... -_-

Dear got that case is smexy. Anyway, this build is total overkill but I like Overkill PC's so go for it if you've got the money.

Meh, If he's got the money and wants an enthusiast platform. When in Rome...

Btw, OP. I recommend picking up Corsair Dominators instead of the Vengeance, or Mushkin, G.Skill or Patriot sticks. Corsair Vengeance sticks are simply so massive you're likely to have problems with coolers. -_-

  17. #17
PSU is not overkill, infact Id step it up. 179 for a 1kw is bottom bin, your spending alot on the system and cheaping out on the PSU, which is prolly the most common mistake in gaming systems. As someone earlier said spend a few dollars more and get a gold rated one, wattage is fine tho.

Id double check to make sure other people havn't had problems with 3x GPUs in that case. 6950 arn't exactly tiny and that case doesn't look the roomiest.

I agree with this. Just because they're compatible doesn't mean they're a perfect match. And if you're spending this much on a system, you don't want it to be somewhat outdated in a few months.

Hard drives don't consume an awfull lot of watts, and even with a quad SLI/Crossfire setup (I heard the AM3+ boards support this?) you'd be hard pressed to kill the 1000W PSU given it's a quality one.

Apparently the new AM3+ socket type is just for the socket, the mounting units are supposed to be the same. Either way my Thermaltake Frio is one of the most modular air coolers on the market and is exceptionally cool.

Release date for Bulldozer chips should be sometime between now and the beginning of August.

No one needs a 1000 watt power supply even with standard SLI or Crossfire unless they are running multiple HD6990's or GTX 580's which very few do. The Bulldozer chips are rumoured to be 95 and 125 watt TDP depending on the model you choose, the whopping 8 core processor is estimated to be around 300 dollars and is the 125 watt TDP that you see in the 6 core Phenom II X6 series while the quad core will probably be 95 watts. I think the biggest advantages is the fact that they are supposedly going to have higher Turbo Core speeds per dollar then the i7 models will due to a higher stock clock speed overall. Even if you overclock your processor to 5Ghz or more, as well as everything else and run an SLI/Crossfire on a new chip, it will still won't draw a ton of power.
