I'd like to note that I never consider a Reference as a Potshot.
The graphics look so dated... awful.
There is also a Mario/Donkey Kong reference near the end of the game where a Pig-Cop it throwing barrels down a stair way. Duke says something along the lines of: "I think I should have a hammer." After reaching the top of the steps and killing the enemy he says: "Huh. I was expecting a monkey."
And on the topic of the game itself I don't see what everyone hates about it so much. Yes it wasn't as good as im sure most people expected it to be but I didn't think it was anywhere close to being as terrible as people seem to think it is. It was one of my most enjoyable single player FPS games that I have played in a long time. My only complaints with it were I wish it was longer(you can see a lot of stuff taken out from the previous versions and in the unlockable concept art) and a glitch where when you are using the turrets in the game enemies would charge and get sort of stuck on it when they jump up on it.
Plus also take this into consideration when judging the game. The only Duke Nukem game in the entire series that has been a FPS is Duke Nukem 3D(not counting the ports). All of the other games in the series have been side scrollers or 3rd person shooters. Yes many people expected Forever to be a Duke 3D 2, me included, but if you go back and watch all of the old trailers released over the years of the game it is pretty evident that it was never really meant to have the same level design/progression as 3D. Best comparison I can make is Duke 3D is more like Bioshock while Forever is more like Halo. 3D was more about exploration while Forever is more linear and fast action based. Now if they had promised us a Duke Nukem 3D 2 I would definitely be disappoint but for what they tried with Forever trying a different more story based route for the game I have no complaints.
woah either my video-game taste is totally screwed up, or the complainers are all kids who love to be catered to :B
i enjoyed both duke nukem forever and DS3. ofc duke nukem forever wasnt the best fps-shooter, but since when is a new game required to be a blockbuster?
my only complain would be that it was too short, and there was a clear shortage of babes in the later second half of the game^^
ds3 impressed me with its new style of controls and i totally got to like that system. i dont know exactly whats to complain about controls there, left klick = attack and right click = move woah yeah, i guess just aliens from mars can perform such a task 8>. its never been written down or anything like it, that all games need to have the same style of controls, and i thought it was like a fresh wind when i really had to practice the game a little first before completely owning all my foes.
theres even more points i like, but i think ill get quote-bashed if im stating more, so i wont even give you the chance
^
Woulda been funnier if he referenced chicken, running in and getting killed (not running WITH you), or just shouting his name or something.
Extremely poor references. 0/10.

^ now THIS is a much better reference.
Still wondering why I play this game.
I'm a Rogue and I also made a spreadsheet for the Order Hall that is updated for BfA.
Just had a couple of other digs:
Valve is referenced where Duke says "I hate valve puzzles!" and Gears of War when you destroy a machine while shrunk, "Duke 1, Gears Nothing"
I'm actually enjoying it more as I go along. It's quite funny in places.
Heh, I really loved the Duke Nukem reference in Blood back in the day.
"I've got time to play with you."
"uhh, shake it baby."
Caleb > Duke.
A: I dont know where you guys live that EB Games still exist because they should all be GameStops by now.
B: I worked for them for years and unless you know someone there they shou8ld never let you return an openned new game for a refund.
and
C: Duke Nukem Forever really isnt as bad as people are saying. Sure it doesnt hold up to todays standards but then again it wasnt ever meant to. It plays like a 1990's shooter and does the exact same thing as Duke 3D did in almost every way except the driving shit. The game simply did what it set out to do.

The people that hate DNF are just kids that grew up playing CoD.
For old farts like me who played Duke during our teenage years (way back in '96) it's a heap of fun to be reacquainted with an old friend.
Duke kinda reminds me of the stereotype of the guy that never got married, and hasn't changed since college, unlike his friends who are now all whipped by their wives.
Please don't try and speak for us "old farts". I was 15 when I played Duke Nukem 3D for the first time in 96, absolutely loved it, even used to make my own levels for it, but DNF is a steaming pile of shit. The ONLY redeeming feature it has is Nostalgia. The gameplay, humour, action and graphics are all sub-par for a modern game, and it's not as fun to play as a retro one.
Oh, and I don't like CoD either, just incase you were going to try and use that to explain my dislike of DNF.
"For old farts like me who played Duke during our teenage years (way back in '96)" certainly sounds like me!
Some of what you said, maybe. I definately don't agree with the part about only CoD players hating it. I hate it, mainly becasue I was a huge Duke Nukem fan. Even being a realist and knowing that the game couldn't possibly live up to the years of waiting didn't prepare me for just how bad it turned out to be.
Duke is dead to me now!
I am not sure if people actually played Duke Nukem 3D.
Some people say that DNF is bad because it is old fashioned, old school, even unlike modern shooters. That is just a lie, and the main reason why fans got so disappointed. What actually made people wonder wtf happened, this is not Duke! is because it has incorporated modern shooters' mechanics and such. Holding two weapons, turrets, strange puzzles and physics. This is not Duke Nukem, this is just another shooter.
Some others say that Duke's personality is bad, shallow and whatever. They are right. However, the Duke from DN3D was something entirely different. DNF's main character is like a dumbed old geezer version. That is not the Duke we knew from past games.
Everything about DNF seems forced, trying too hard and lacking identity. This is not a Duke Nukem game, this is a game of some stupid old geezer way too amazed by his own cock. It is like Blizzard releasing a game where Kerrigan is not evil and cold, but a heart-warming Queen of Hearts, or just crazy maniac instead of evil.
I find those references to other games rather silly, to be honest. Devs tried too hard and pushed it too far. Given the expectation over the years, the game seems even worse. This is not a Duke Nukem game after all. :/
