Red face Computer Upgrade Advice Pt 2

    Hi Everyone,

I'm continuing from a thread I started a week ago.

My parents recently gave me 3,000 for a new computer.

Any advice on what I should buy? I'm going to Halifax to shop for the parts this weekend.

Someone I know suggested I buy these components for the new computer, what's your opinion / advice?

Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth P67 Rev 3.0
    Processor: Intel Core i7 970 6 Core Processor LGA1366 3.2GHZ
    Video Processor: ASUS GeForce GTX 590 612MHZ 3GB 3420MHZ GDDR5
HDD: I already own a HDD
    Memory: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600

Please bare in mind that I know VERY little about computers.

    Thanks

Get a Sandy Bridge configuration instead (i5-2500k or i7-2600k). The GPU is pretty much an overkill for anything below 2650x1600. And HD6990 is better.

Just a word of caution, if you plan on getting an aftermarket HSF you might have trouble mounting it with Vengeance memory because of the fins

HSF = Heat Sink Fan? That would be the same fan that I've got on my current computer? (Big Copper Thing Below)

video is to much but if he has money ... maybe , sabertooth is a great mobo i own one atm so its awsum (just get small fan 50X50X10 if you get it ) but maybe then you could get instead a maximus 4 ? and get of course a sandy bridge i7 .

Look there again, you can get a better PC for less money.
The i5 2500K is better than the i7 970 and that for half the price.

don't get an i7 9xx, go for the new generation (sandy bridge) i7 2600(k). Or i5 2500k, it's also very good.
You will need to adjust the mobo choice also, you'll need a socket 1155 board then. (for both cpus I mentioned). Asus is not a bad choice.
As for your cpu cooler, you'll need to check if your old one works with the 1155 socket.

Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth P67 Rev 3.0 - Although the unique look this motherboard is actually not that great, the kevlar shield is a nice feature in theory but kevlar is actually rubbish at distributing heat and thus this board will have a very low life-time
Processor: Intel Core i7 970 6 Core Processor LGA1366 3.2GHZ - Good CPU but the 2nd generation i7/i5's are better and cheaper, I'd go for a i5 2500K instead of this or the i7 2600K if you really want to push the boat out.
Video Processor: ASUS GeForce GTX 590 612MHZ 3GB 3420MHZ GDDR5 - This card is complete and utter overkill with the new i5/i7 chips, these new chips actually help the GFX card with it's processes and have 800Mhz that they dedicate to helping the GFX card so you really do not need this card
HDD: I already own a HDD
Memory: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 - again...overkill, are you planning to OC? otherwise this is not needed.

-8GB is actually useful for a high-end rig.

And has anyone pointed out that the 9xx isn't even compatible with that Sabertooth?

haha right... but since every poster so far suggested not to get a last-generation cpu, I hope she'll take the advice.

Background for mylaa: Basically, you need to look which socket your CPU is (e.g. i7 920 is socket 1366, the newer generation ("sandy bridge") are 1155) and get a matching motherboard (and heatsink, for that matter). The Sabertooth P67 is 1155.

Nice one, I automatically assumed it was the X58 Sabertooth because of the CPU.

Then I'd say to swap the i7 970 to a i5 2500K and go for it.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your email or the sentence quoted above, but if you know very little about computers why are you building/upgrading one? (from you questions about parts)

3K should buy you a ready to go system that will do all the gaming, work, etc. you want to do, probably with some $$ leftover and everything should work out of the box.

Build computers and knowing how they work are polar opposites.

yup, 1st of all why buy old CPU
2nd the MB wont support it :]
3rd, as stated before gtx590 is 10-15% worser then hd6990
4th, also stated before, your heatsink is kinda big, so not sure about the MB architecture the memory might not fit, also the heatsink mouting thingy might not fit your new MB
5th, your old hard drive might be too old and will be bottlenecking everything that you will put in this rig
6th, what with PSU? with the stuff that you linked u will need at least 600W

I wasn't talking about the amount rather the speed, unless he OC's he will never hit 1600Mhz so he may aswell just get 1333Mhz with normal heatsinks instead of those over-the-top space age one's

Doesn't matter if you have the money or not, GTX590 is a big, big mistake. GTX580 or GTX580 SLI if you're feeling really rich, but stay away from dual-GPU cards.

Thanks, I'm starting to believe my friend doesn't exactly understand old from new anymore.

I don't want to buy an old processor or motherboard.

This is what I have came up with.

    ASUS P8P67 Pro REV3.0 ATX P67 LGA1155 DDR3 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 2PCI Sandy Bridge B3 Motherboard - $196.98 CAD
    Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Unlocked Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Sandy Bridge 6MB - $238.99 CAD
    Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Dual Channel - $102.41 CAD
    XFX Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition 940MHZ 1GB 4.6GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI 2x Mini DP PCI-E Video Card - $219.99 CAD

With a budget as big as you have, you can get a better GPU...
