    can you plug a 6.0 Gb/s HDD into a 3.0 Gb/s sata connector?

Will this cause any problems at all? Or should I just get a 3.0 Gb/s HDD instead?

Yes you can do it, though it may not run optimally compared to a SATA3 (6Gb/s) port.
