So, what happened to the Sims?

Around 2000, the Sims came out, and people were head over heels for that game. It sold millions of copies, and appealed to female, (...and males who won't admit it) gamers. Its second expansion did just about as well. The Third did alright also.

So, what happened? Do people still play the Sims? Or after so long, it's just old news?

Sims 3 is very popular, I for one, love the Sims and Sims 2, Sims 3.. I want to like it, but it's just.. not the same, it's been absolutely ruined by EA. Sigh.. I miss Maxis.

I need story mode. I bought Sims 3 thinking it was like The Sims on PS2, but it didn't have story mode. I lost all interest.

Original SimCity games from Maxis... damn I miss those. My personal favourite SimCity 3000 or SimCity 4 with Rush Hour expansion

And Sims... I do not know, my sister plays it and I build houses for her

    EDIT: Yes, I am a male :P

I guess people get bored after a while... I miss the vampires, robots, wherewolves, plantpeople, aliens from The Sims 2.

When i used to play that was about all i did. Money cheat, build a mansion, money cheat, build a mansion. I hate-hate-hate-hate taking care of my sims. They were so damn annoying always asking for crap and never being happy. I don't want to mico manage every aspect of their day for eternity.

Then i found real games and i forgot about the sims.

Im a male and love Sims to a certain extent.

The only thing I like doing is building houses and sharing them with the community. And I also like killing people in the game with cheats -_- (no creeper)

I think it's like RollerCoaster Tycoon for my personally. When it went true 3D and stuff it was cool and all but it lost it's charm. I've lost my complete drive to to play those games though. I played the first one and had all the expansions, played the hell out of that game. Did all the magic, went on vacation and dates, made my own lots in those. Became a super star with pets.

Now when I play it feels very repetitive, I played 3 and made a Sim write tons of books. It's awesome how the house transitions into the world so seamlessly and to exercise you can just run to corners of the map. Just feels different and not as fun any more, might not be the game I probably just burnt out on it.

Imagination is the only story mode I need.

Personally, I just dislike how the game constantly throws expansions out. They cost a lot, and lack quality control, and cost more than they're worth.

They've become money hungry, they have a massive shop that is so damn expensive.

I still play it from time to time, although it certainly isn't as entertaining as it used to be. I remember when I first started playing it when the original The Sims game came out. Oh I wasted many nights in front of my computer! The game has come quite a long way since then, although the basic concept remain the same. But I'm not sure that's a good thing. Currently there is a bug in Sims 3, which ruins my games and as a result I can't be bothered with playing until EA finds a way to fix it.
But many people play Sims 3 and share ideas and custom content online. And I believe yet another expansion for Sims 3 will be out in a few months.

Sims didn't die, people resulted to "sharing" it because of the way EA has handled the business plan with Sims 3. As Daginni said, the lack of quality but abundant quantity of expansions has turned a lot of people off. Its the reason my sister didn't buy 3.

I was the person that would emulate my own twisted version of "Survivor" or weird social experiments. When my sister finally got Sims 3 I wasn't allowed to play because the world is now somewhat persistent.

Sims is fun but eventualy you make a huge family and just kill everyone, move in a new family and haunt them. my ex gf's love doing that

It's EA, what do you expect? Maxis is no longer on board.

I think people finally wised up to playing a "game" that is just real life dumbed down. It was neat at first for the novelty, though.
