Which of the bigger maninboard manufacturers to you prefer and why?

Gigabyte.
Has the functions I want from them, nice colour, nice BIOS.
EDIT - dual bios even, on most Gigabyteboards, even in the budgetsegments. And the voting option wasn't there when I posted!

I only have experience with ASUS, so I can't comment on other manufacturers. When I was selecting parts for my PC the P8P67 Pro seemed to have the best match of features I was looking for. Also, the exchange process when the 6-series chipsets got recalled was pretty painless.

I wonder why Asus is so popular.

They have been in the enthusiast market the longest, with the fewest lemons while offering unique features. Gigabyte and MSI have had issues in the past. Ten years ago I laughed at people who bought gigabyte. They sure have turned around though. asus and gigabyte are the best imo.

Edit: keep forgetting I'm getting old. Probably more than ten years ago that gigabyte was in the tank.

Certainly. Abit motherboards through the Intel 800 Series chipsets, skipping the 945-965, then probably their best motherboard ever in the IP35 series.

These days though? Asus certainly has the most refined UEFI implementation. My universal complaint about most motherboards these days is none of them have good onboard fan-control compared to Abit's uGuru. Two of the fan headers on my Asus P8P67 Deluxe can't even be controlled, at all. I had to put resistors on the fans themselves.

I love my Asus. I think for me, a lot of motherboards (as long as you're not getting some no-name brand that's made from toothpicks...) are really pretty similar. The differences come in the BIOS, the aesthetic, the durability, and the company itself. I'm happy with my P8P67 PRO's BIOS (zomg you can use a mouse!! whoever thought of that is magical...). It looks pretty. It held up to me doing stupid shit like picking up the motherboard by the edges with this monstrosity of a heatsink on it... (it bowed a bit... oops!)

But most importantly, dealing with Asus when the Sandy Bridge chipsets were being recalled was an absolute breeze. I put in my information for the RMA on like Friday? I got confused with some wording, called them to make sure I wasn't on crack... And they apologized that my new motherboards hadn't been shipped out yet and would likely be mailed on Monday. (It was like 3pm PST on Friday and I put in the ticket at like 2...) Turns out they were wrong and the new motherboards got to me on Monday. AND they sent us free headsets for the "inconvenience."

Maybe that sounds like "typical customer service" to some people. But to me, it's enough to make me loyal to the brand under most circumstances.

Edit: OH! And I forgot. The motherboard comes with the "how to build your computer, yo" manual. My old computer's Gigabyte manual was kind of umm... not nice. I was very happy with the Asus one.

I've only ever tried Asus and they have never let me down. Not a single fault all these years.

Asus is my preferred MB of choice. Built 5 PCs over the years with very few problems with Asus, although I have just replaced my P5E with a P8Z68V Pro due to the MB just dying (4 years old with heavy use during that time... it had a good life). I'd buy a Gigabyte if Asus wasn't around anymore though although 5 years ago I wouldn't touch one with a bazillion mile pole.

I've had Abit MBs start on fire (twice, not overclocked, just blown caps that literally started on fire), ASRock MBs burn out components (RAM and CPU, again, not overclocked) when they faulted, and MSI MBs that just didn't want to work (RMA'd multiple times with the same result, change manufacturer to Asus and everything worked fine). I won't build PCs for friends anymore unless they use a decent Asus MB on their sheet although I'd probably build a Gigabyte to see how they work.
