Forum Emoticons

This may seem like a strange suggestion, but is it possible we could get a choice of turning a string of characters into the corresponding emoticon, rather than it just changing automatically upon post?
The reason I ask this is because I find : D (minus the gap inbetween, for demonstrational purposes) to be much more cuter and awesome looking than , I don't know why. Same goes for plenty of other emoticons, and I think I'm not the only person with this wish.
